Sherman, Texas
Where farm species go after a death near Sherman
North Texas storm season can bring hail, high wind and even tornadoes to the Sherman area in spring, and summer heat still demands fast action after a large animal dies. Winter ice can make farm roads hazardous for heavy trucks. Keep the names of two or three rendering and cremation services near the phone, and note which ones will come out on weekends.
Many Grayson County families raise show animals for FFA and 4-H or keep horses for ranch work and roping, and those animals often feel like family. A specialist can cremate a horse or show steer individually, though transport from the Sherman area adds to the cost. Get that figure on paper, and hold back a lead rope, a trophy buckle or a lock of tail.
Fallen-stock collection and rendering have long been the farm answer around Sherman, and they're quick and inexpensive. But rendering plants are closing, and in many areas the truck no longer runs for a single small animal. If the collector does come, nothing is returned. For a named goat or pet pig, many families decide that's not the ending they want and look for a private cremation in a larger centre such as McKinney.
Sherman's population is around 52,417, the 72nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. McKinney, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Sherman run from there.
Families in Sherman often end up using a provider from Denison (10 miles), Anna (20 miles) and Celina (23 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation rates in Texas and your animal
With cremation at about 55.7%[1] for people in Texas, providers here serve a mixed market, and not all of them have met a goat. When you ring, describe the animal plainly: species, weight, horned or not, and whether it was euthanized. A provider who asks sensible follow-up questions has usually done this before.
The Texas figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Sherman
Heat affects the living animals too. In August, pigs and heavily fleeced alpacas and sheep are prone to heat stress, and a sudden death in hot weather is worth mentioning to your vet in case others are at risk. If a planned euthanasia is coming up, book it for early morning, when the barn is coolest and the collection crew has the whole day to reach you.
On a 93°F day in August, a metal trailer or pickup bed turns into an oven. If you're delivering the animal yourself, go at first light, load in shade and drive straight there. Call ahead so the crematory is ready to receive your goat or pig instead of leaving it in a hot vehicle in the yard.

Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Sherman
For a small backyard flock, costs are modest: a single hen falls in the smallest pet band, and many keepers choose communal cremation. For a goat or sheep, the bigger variable is collection. A crew with a winch coming out to a farm near Sherman can cost as much as the cremation itself, so ask what's included before you agree.

Livestock and pet rules in Texas
Composting is an approved route for dead stock in many places: in the 2014–2015 US bird flu outbreak it handled 85%[5] of poultry carcasses, according to the EPA. But it isn't allowed for every species everywhere, and a pile needs careful management. The pet-level picture for Texas is below; check the livestock rules before you build one.

What to do first, second and third
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's time for a few quiet minutes in the barn or paddock, even on a busy farm day.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs or any other scavenger while you're on the phone.
- Find a provider that takes your species at its weight. Your vet will know local options, or we can send you local options.
- Choose private, communal or collection, then get it in writing so there's no doubt about which one is booked.
- Decide how the animal gets there. Collection from the farm costs extra; taking it in your own pickup or trailer often cuts the bill a good deal.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no rush to settle it today; plenty of keepers hold off on scattering until an anniversary or a change of season.
Remembering your animal in Sherman
Grayson County is working farm and ranch country, with cattle, hay and horse operations surrounding Sherman on all sides, and many residents keep a few animals on acreage. After a horse or heifer dies, a hauler will want directions past cattle guards, the width of the pasture gate and a sense of whether the red clay is dry or slick from recent rain.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Sherman actually based?
Some are local, and some run from McKinney, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Sherman and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Sherman follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Does the Sherman climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sherman?
Usually yes. Denison is about 10 miles away, Anna is about 20 miles away and Celina is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
What's the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation?
Private means your animal is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. Partitioned means several animals share the chamber but are kept apart, so the ashes are mostly, not certainly, your animal's. Communal means animals are cremated together and nothing is returned. For a named goat or pig, ask for private in writing if the ashes matter.
