South Jordan, Utah
Where farm species go after a death near South Jordan
South Jordan was mostly farmland along the Jordan River not long ago, and some horse and livestock properties remain in the older parts of the city. Salt Lake County's equestrian park is also here, drawing show and hobby riders from across the valley. When a large animal dies, collection usually comes from a hauler serving the whole valley, so ask about access and distance.
As South Jordan fills in, the space for large animals is shrinking, and burial on a small lot is rarely allowed or practical. Owners usually choose individual cremation, communal cremation, or removal by a renderer. A written price covering collection, cremation and return makes the options easier to compare, and a lock of mane, fleece or tail makes a simple keepsake whatever you decide.
Burial is still common around South Jordan, and on your own land it's often allowed for many species, with conditions. Those conditions matter: a minimum depth, distances from wells and streams, and in many places a time limit after death. A 150 lb goat needs a much bigger hole than a dog, usually dug by machine. If your animal was euthanized, go deeper than the minimum or choose cremation to protect scavenging wildlife.
With roughly 87,614 residents, South Jordan is the 10th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 15 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover South Jordan run from there.
Families in South Jordan often end up using a provider from Riverton (3 miles), West Jordan (3 miles) and Herriman (5 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
46.1%[1]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension).

Cremation rates in Utah and your animal
Where cremation covers only about 46.1%[1] of human deaths, as in Utah, the nearest pet crematory may be further off than you'd like, and fewer still take farm species. Call one before you need it. Five minutes on the phone while your animal is well tells you the weight limit, the collection radius and the price, which is far easier than finding out on a hard day.

South Jordan weather and your animal's first hours
Both South Jordan extremes are hard on the animals themselves. Heat stress hits pigs, alpacas and unshorn sheep in July; hard frosts in January, February and December are tough on old goats and backyard hens. When a death comes in a spell of extreme weather, check the rest of the herd or flock, and tell your vet if more than one animal seems off.
Because South Jordan swings from 94°F summers to freezing lows in January, February and December, a plan made in one season may fail in the other. Ask your provider both versions of the question: how fast can you collect in a heat wave, and can your vehicle get up an icy track? Pin both answers up in the feed room.

Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn
Expect the total in South Jordan to depend on four things: your animal's weight, private or communal, how the animal gets to the crematory and what the ashes come back in. Communal cremation, where nothing is returned, usually costs half or less. If you can deliver the animal yourself, the collection line on the quote may disappear altogether.

What Utah allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
If your animal was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body and can poison scavenging wildlife, and US drug labels have warned since 2003[5] that such animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. That alone rules out a shallow grave. The notes below cover the general rules in Utah; cremation meets all of them.

For Utah's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Utah guide. Local rules in South Jordan can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, second and third
- If the death was expected, you and your vet may already have a plan. Call and confirm the collection time, and book any home euthanasia for the cool of the morning.
- If it was sudden, your first call is to the vet or farm vet. They can say whether tests are worth doing and whether the other animals might be in danger.
- Clear a path for collection. Open gates, move vehicles and think about how a van or trailer will reach the animal.
- Line up help. A 150 lb animal takes at least two people to move safely, plus a tarp, sled or slide board.
- Ask the provider three questions: is it truly private, how is my animal identified from the gate to the ashes, and when will the ashes come back?
- Check the rules before any burial or composting if that's what you'd rather do: which species, how deep, how far from water, and how soon.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
A heavy horse or cow is hard to move on frozen or muddy ground, and new neighborhoods squeezed around older pastures leave little room to turn a large truck. Ask your vet about choosing a place for euthanasia that a trailer can reach. Settling this ahead of time spares you from solving it in a hurry when the animal is already down.

Questions people ask
How do Utah attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Utah human cremation rate at about 46.1%[1]. We show it on the South Jordan page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 15 miles from South Jordan) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the South Jordan climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 94°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Which nearby towns can I compare with South Jordan?
The closest communities we cover are Riverton (about 3 miles), West Jordan (about 3 miles) and Herriman (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve South Jordan too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can a crematory collect if our farm track is snowed in?
Often not with a standard van. Clear a path if you can, or move the animal with help on a tarp or sled to the nearest plowed yard. In a real storm, a body keeps in a cold outbuilding for a day or more, so it's usually fine to wait for the road to open rather than risk a stuck vehicle and a second callout fee.
Will a pet crematory near South Jordan take a goat or sheep?
Many will, but not all. Pet crematories are built around dogs and cats, and some cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb or don't take farm species at all. Give the species and an honest weight estimate on the first call. If the answer is no, ask who they'd recommend; they usually know which local providers take larger animals.
