Lehi, Utah
Who can help with a goat, pig or sheep in Lehi
Fast growth has pushed rooftops right up to old pastures around Lehi, and rules for keeping and burying livestock can change when a parcel is rezoned or annexed. Before planning a burial at home, check current zoning with the city or with Utah County. Many owners pick individual cremation instead, especially if they may sell, and keep a halter, a bell or braided tail hair as a memento.
Winter makes large-animal aftercare harder here. Frozen ground and drifted snow may block a trailer from the barn, and from December to February digging a grave on your own acreage may be impossible. If an elderly horse, steer or llama is fading in autumn, sit down with your vet to plan the timing and pick a firm, plowed location that a hauler can back up to.
Distance from a crematory is why timing matters so much in rural areas around Lehi. Ruminants like goats, sheep and alpacas start to bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat for a long time. If the nearest provider that takes farm species is a long drive away, call them before you do anything else, then keep the animal shaded, covered and off the bare ground while you wait.
With roughly 95,313 residents, Lehi is the 6th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 24 miles (38 km) away, which is where some providers serving Lehi are based.
For a second opinion on price, Highland (4 miles), American Fork (5 miles) and Bluffdale (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Lehi routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
46.1%[1]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension).

Cremation rates in Utah and your animal
Burial is still the tradition in Utah, where only about 46.1%[1] of people are cremated. For a farm animal that often means a grave dug by tractor on your own land. Before you go that way, check the depth and distance-from-water rules and think about scavengers if a vet euthanized your animal. Cremation keeps things simpler, and it's available even where it's less common.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Lehi tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What the seasons mean for farm animal aftercare in Lehi
Because Lehi swings from 95°F summers to freezing lows in January, February, November and December, a plan made in one season may fail in the other. Ask your provider both versions of the question: how fast can you collect in a heat wave, and can your vehicle get up an icy track? Pin both answers up in the feed room.
Lehi gets both extremes: summer highs around 95°F in July, and freezing lows in January, February, November and December. In summer, speed is everything for a goat, sheep or pig, because the body bloats and attracts flies quickly. In winter you have more time, but frozen ground can rule out a burial until spring. Plan for both, ideally before you need to.

Budgeting in Lehi for a pig, ewe or goat
US pet cremation price lists run from about $30 for a small communal cremation to $500 and more for a large private one[4], and farm species usually land at the top end or beyond. Ask any provider serving Lehi for a written quote that separates the cremation, collection, mileage, after-hours fees and the urn, and give an honest weight estimate up front.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Livestock law and pet rules in Utah
Rules for dead farm animals change more across borders than almost any other part of pet aftercare. England bans burying pet pigs, sheep and goats; many US states allow it with conditions; California even bans composting whole sheep and goats. The general notes for Utah follow. Treat them as the pet baseline and check livestock rules on top.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lehi.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Lehi's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, second and third
- Stop and count. Two or more birds or animals dying within a day or two, with no obvious cause such as a predator, is a reason to pause before you move anything.
- Put on gloves and keep the bodies away from the living stock. Double-bag birds; cover larger animals where they lie.
- Ring the vet, or your national animal health agency, then give a precise account of what you found. In many countries, bird flu, swine fevers and a number of sheep and goat diseases have to be reported.
- Wait for the all-clear before cremation, burial or composting. Testing may be offered, and a body may need to go to a laboratory first.
- Keep visitors and borrowed equipment off the property until you know more, and scrub boots and feeders between pens.
- Once you're cleared, decide animal by animal. Plenty of keepers opt for a communal cremation for most of a flock and a private one for a single favorite bird.
Remembering your animal in Lehi
Lehi still carries its farming roots. The Lehi Round-Up rodeo has run every summer for decades, and on the edges of town some lots keep horses, a few steers or 4-H goats and sheep. Moving a big animal after death takes a flatbed or a winch-equipped trailer, and haulers here often range across Utah County, so get the mileage fee in writing first.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Lehi actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 24 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Lehi and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Lehi climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 95°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Lehi?
The closest communities we cover are Highland (about 4 miles), American Fork (about 5 miles) and Bluffdale (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Lehi too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Lehi page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[1] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is there anyone near Lehi who will dig a grave for a large pig or goat?
Often a neighbor or a local contractor with an excavator will, for a fee. Before they dig, check whether burial is allowed for that species at all, and the setbacks from wells, water and property lines. Locate buried pipes and cables first. If a vet euthanized the animal, ask for a grave well below the minimum depth, or choose cremation instead.
Are there farm animal cremation options near Lehi, or do I need to travel?
In a town the size of Lehi, the nearest crematory that takes goats, sheep or pigs is often in a larger centre such as Salt Lake City. Many offer farm collection with a mileage charge; others will accept a trailer delivery for less. Your local vet will know which provider other smallholders use.
