Bluffdale, Utah
Finding a crematory that takes farm species near Bluffdale
Getting a single horse cremated with its ashes returned is a specialist service with few providers and a weight-based price that surprises many first-time owners. Bluffdale families also look at shared cremation and rendering, or a backyard grave if city code permits it for their lot. Ask every provider for the full figure up front, and clip a little mane or keep a show ribbon before the animal is taken.
Bluffdale is among the few places in Salt Lake County where horses, goats, cattle and chickens remain common on residential lots, thanks to large-lot zoning in many neighborhoods. If you keep large animals here, line up a removal service while things are calm, making sure it can get through your gates and along narrow lanes. Neighbors who've been through it can often tell you who they called.
Your local vet in Bluffdale is probably the most useful person you can call. Rural vets deal with sheep, goats and pigs every week, know which crematories will take them and often know the collectors by name. Don't be shy about asking what they'd do with their own animal, or whether a neighbor with a tractor and front loader might help move a heavy body to a trailer.
Bluffdale is home to about 19,506 people, the 49th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Salt Lake City, roughly 20 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bluffdale run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Riverton (3 miles, a larger centre), Draper (4 miles, a larger centre) and Herriman (4 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Bluffdale routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

The local attitude to cremation
Burial is still the tradition in Utah, where only about 46.1%[1] of people are cremated. For a farm animal that often means a grave dug by tractor on your own land. Before you go that way, check the depth and distance-from-water rules and think about scavengers if a vet euthanized your animal. Cremation keeps things simpler, and it's available even where it's less common.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Utah figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Bluffdale tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around the seasons in Bluffdale
Because Bluffdale swings from 94°F summers to freezing lows in January, February and December, a plan made in one season may fail in the other. Ask your provider both versions of the question: how fast can you collect in a heat wave, and can your vehicle get up an icy track? Pin both answers up in the feed room.
Collection in Bluffdale can be slowed by summer demand and by winter roads. In a hot month, ask the provider for the earliest slot and keep the body in deep shade with ice along the belly. In a freezing month, clear a path, lay the animal on a tarp so it doesn't freeze to the bedding, and check that a van can actually get up your drive.

Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn
By our estimate, private pet cremation in the US gets cheaper per pound as animals get heavier, falling to about $4 a pound at 100 lb[4]. Large-animal cremation drops further, to about $0.80/lb[5] for a horse. A goat or ewe sits between those two, which is why a quote for a farm pet in Bluffdale can look high as a total but fair per pound.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Utah: Utah costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you bury or compost in Utah
In most places a pet goat or pig is still a goat or pig in the eyes of the law, so the rules written for farms apply to it. Those rules exist for water safety and disease control, and they tend to favor collection, rendering or cremation over burial. The notes below cover Utah in general; ask your vet or animal health office about your species.
The official Utah local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Bluffdale.
For Utah's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Utah guide. Local rules in Bluffdale can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, second and third
- Check the time. In warm weather, aim to have your animal collected or delivered the same day. Ruminants bloat quickly.
- Lay the body on a tarp that's sturdy enough to pull, and prop the head up a little if you can; loading will go much more smoothly afterwards.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died, and also when something doesn't look right, above all with pigs or a backyard flock.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Ask about chamber size, lifting gear and the collection radius.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure it covers mileage, out-of-hours fees and any winch charge.
- Watch the others. Donkeys, alpacas and goats sometimes pace or call out for days. Hold to the usual routine and spend longer with the animal that was closest.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Ground along the Jordan River floodplain can be soft and wet after snowmelt, and some properties sit on steep bluffs above it. When a senior horse, cow or llama is failing, plan where euthanasia and loading can happen, close to firm ground and a driveway wide enough for a truck and trailer. Deciding in good weather makes a difficult day much easier to manage.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Bluffdale?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why does the Bluffdale page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[1] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Where are the providers that serve Bluffdale actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 20 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Bluffdale and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bluffdale?
Usually yes. Riverton is about 3 miles away, Draper is about 4 miles away and Herriman is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can a crematory collect if our farm track is snowed in?
Often not with a standard van. Clear a path if you can, or move the animal with help on a tarp or sled to the nearest plowed yard. In a real storm, a body keeps in a cold outbuilding for a day or more, so it's usually fine to wait for the road to open rather than risk a stuck vehicle and a second callout fee.
Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
