Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
Burial and cremation sit side by side in Texas, where cremation is chosen for around 55.7%[1] of people, often within one family. Step by step, from the field to the ashes

- Ask for a written total that bundles the cremation, pickup, mileage and urn, and have it before any vehicle leaves.
- Take keepsakes before collection: an ear tag, the collar or halter, a handful of feathers or a snip of fleece.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Coastal pasture near Galveston Bay floods easily after storms, and a hurricane can leave fields under water for days. Owners of horses or livestock in the area should think ahead about where a large animal could be collected if the ground is saturated. A gravel pad or a spot near a paved road makes it much easier for a trailer to reach the animal.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Houston to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Houston (roughly 42 miles from Tiki Island) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Tiki Island?

Why can't I just bury a euthanized goat or pig in a shallow grave?
The euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can kill dogs, foxes, vultures and eagles that dig it up. That's why US drug labels have required a warning since 2003[8] that euthanized animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. For a single animal, cremation is usually the simplest safe answer.
Do sheep and goats need testing before cremation?
Not usually for a pet crematory. But if a sheep or goat dies unexpectedly, your vet may suggest a post-mortem, and in the US older sheep and goats can often be sampled for scrapie surveillance. Ask before the body leaves, because testing can't be done after cremation. A few crematories won't accept an animal suspected of a notifiable disease.
Can I bring my goat or pig to the crematory myself?
Usually yes, and it often saves the whole collection fee. Call ahead to agree a time, confirm they accept the weight and ask how they unload. A pickup or small trailer with a ramp works well; lay the animal on a tarp so it can be slid rather than lifted. Bring a helper, and don't try to lift a heavy animal alone.
