Sheldon, Texas
Where farm species go after a death near Sheldon
Clay soils and flat land around Sheldon Lake can stay waterlogged after heavy rain, and back pastures become hard for any truck to reach. If a horse or cow is getting old, think ahead about a firm, open patch close to your drive or barn. Point it out to your vet on the next visit so everyone knows the plan, and keep that gate unobstructed.
Development pressure means many owners here keep large animals on relatively small tracts, where home burial may be impractical or restricted by deed or county rules. Single-animal cremation for horses and cattle is available at only a few regional facilities, priced by weight. A nameplate from the stall, a halter hung by the door or a rosette from a youth show makes a meaningful keepsake.
In a small town like Sheldon, word travels fast, and you may hear several opinions about what to do with a dead goat or sheep. The only ones that bind you are the law and your own wishes. Check the first with your vet, settle the second with your family, and let the rest go by.
Sheldon is home to about 2,000 people, the 298th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Houston, about 16 miles (26 km) away, which is where some providers serving Sheldon are based.
Our pages for Barrett (4 miles), Crosby (5 miles) and Highlands (5 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Sheldon as well.

How Texas thinks about cremation
About 55.7%[1] of people in Texas are cremated, and the figure has been climbing for years. Farm animal aftercare has followed at its own pace. Burial on the farm is still common for stock, but more families now choose cremation for the animals they named: the pet goat, the old ewe, the pig that followed the children around the yard.
The Texas figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What the seasons mean for farm animal aftercare in Sheldon
Backyard flocks feel Sheldon's heat as well. Hens lost in a heat wave should be bagged, kept cool and dealt with promptly, and several deaths at once are worth a call to your vet, since heat and disease can look alike at first. A single bird is simple to take to a pet crematory; ask for a small container if you'd like the ashes, because a hen returns only a spoonful or two.
On a 95°F day in August, a metal trailer or pickup bed turns into an oven. If you're delivering the animal yourself, go at first light, load in shade and drive straight there. Call ahead so the crematory is ready to receive your goat or pig instead of leaving it in a hot vehicle in the yard.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds
By our estimate, private pet cremation in the US gets cheaper per pound as animals get heavier, falling to about $4 a pound at 100 lb[4]. Large-animal cremation drops further, to about $0.80/lb[5] for a horse. A goat or ewe sits between those two, which is why a quote for a farm pet in Sheldon can look high as a total but fair per pound.

Burial, composting and reporting rules in Texas
The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for Texas below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Sheldon.
We keep Texas's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Texas rules summary. Before a home burial in Sheldon, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
What to do when a farm animal dies in Sheldon
- If the death was expected, you and your vet may already have a plan. Call and confirm the collection time, and book any home euthanasia for the cool of the morning.
- If it was sudden, your first call is to the vet or farm vet. They can say whether tests are worth doing and whether the other animals might be in danger.
- Clear a path for collection. Open gates, move vehicles and think about how a van or trailer will reach the animal.
- Line up help. A 150 lb animal takes at least two people to move safely, plus a tarp, sled or slide board.
- Ask the provider three questions: whether the cremation is genuinely private, how they track which animal is which between the gate and the ashes, and when you'll get the ashes back.
- Check the rules before any burial or composting if that's what you'd rather do: which species, how deep, how far from water, and how soon.
Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm
Despite its closeness to industrial corridors and the Ship Channel, parts of Sheldon remain semi-rural, with horses, goats and a few cattle kept on acreage off the main roads. Moving one of those animals after death means calling someone with a winch trailer. Houston-area haulers often cover this side of the county, but confirm travel costs and how long they usually take to arrive.

Questions people ask
Does the Sheldon climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 95°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Will I have to travel to Houston to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Houston (roughly 16 miles from Sheldon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Sheldon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Sheldon?
Usually yes. Barrett is about 4 miles away, Crosby is about 5 miles away and Highlands is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How much does it cost to cremate a goat in Sheldon?
A small goat of 50 to 80 lb usually falls in the same range as a large dog, roughly $200 to $300 for a private cremation in the US. A full-size dairy or meat goat is often quoted individually, and farm collection and mileage are extra. Ask any Sheldon provider for a written total that separates the cremation from the collection.
What if my animal dies while we're away from home?
Ask whoever is minding the farm to call your vet first and you second. Before you travel, leave written instructions: private or communal, which provider, how much you're willing to spend and any keepsake to save. A signed note lets a sitter act quickly in hot weather instead of waiting for you to pick up the phone, and it spares them guessing what you'd want.
