Bringing your farm pet's ashes home in Horizon City

Horizon City, Texas

Finding a crematory that takes farm species near Horizon City

Large-animal cremation is scarce in far West Texas, and from Horizon City the nearest facility offering it may be a long haul away, possibly across the state line. That distance drives the price, so get a written quote that covers transport both ways. Rendering is often the practical fallback. A bridle, a halter or a few shoes make lasting keepsakes.

El Paso County's Lower Valley, down toward Socorro, San Elizario, Clint and Fabens, still has horse properties, small farms and dairy operations along the Rio Grande. If a horse or other large animal dies there or on acreage near Horizon City, distance and access are the main issues, since dirt roads and irrigation ditches can limit where a heavy truck can go.

Fallen-stock collection and rendering have long been the farm answer around Horizon City, and they're quick and inexpensive. But rendering plants are closing, and in many areas the truck no longer runs for a single small animal. If the collector does come, nothing is returned. For a named goat or pet pig, many families decide that's not the ending they want and look for a private cremation in a larger centre such as El Paso.

With roughly 25,118 residents, Horizon City is the 129th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is El Paso, about 18 miles (29 km) away, which is where some providers serving Horizon City are based.

Horizon City sits within easy reach of Socorro (5 miles), El Paso (18 miles, a larger centre) and Sunland Park (26 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Horizon City; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

55.7%[1]

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The numbers above come from Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension), if you'd like to read the original sources.

A farm animal at home in Horizon City

Cremation habits in Texas, and what they mean for your animal

Cremation now covers around 55.7%[1] of deaths in Texas, so most families here have sat through at least one cremation service. That experience carries over: people know to ask what comes back, how it's identified and how long it takes. Put the same three questions to anyone offering to take your sheep, pig or goat.

That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Horizon City only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

When the weather sets the timetable in Horizon City

Horizon City summers are hot, with June highs averaging around 97°F. That shortens the time you have. The rumen of a goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death, and in heat the body can bloat within hours. Move your animal into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp, and cover it loosely against flies. Ask for same-day collection.

In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), don't plan on waiting until tomorrow. A 150 lb pig or goat holds heat long after death, and flies arrive fast. If collection will be delayed, lay bags of ice or frozen water bottles along the belly and flank under a light cover, never under a sealed plastic sheet, which traps heat. Hosing the body down doesn't help for long; shade does.

How much to budget in Horizon City

Expect the total in Horizon City to depend on four things: your animal's weight, private or communal, how the animal gets to the crematory and what the ashes come back in. Communal cremation, where nothing is returned, usually costs half or less. If you can deliver the animal yourself, the collection line on the quote may disappear altogether.

Before you bury or compost in Texas

A rough rule holds almost everywhere: the bigger the animal, the more the law cares where it ends up. A hen or duck is treated much like any small pet. A 150 lb ewe or a pig brings setbacks from wells, depth requirements and sometimes an outright ban. Here's what Texas says about pets in general; expect a large farm species to be held to a higher standard.

The rules that apply across Texas (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Texas page. Horizon City may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

What to do first, second and third

  1. Cover the body loosely and move it into shade or a cool outbuilding if you can do so safely.
  2. Let the herd or flock settle. One keeper will give a close companion a little time beside the body; another takes it away at once. Neither is wrong.
  3. Talk to your vet about why it died, whether anything must be reported and, for a sheep or goat, what testing is available.
  4. Compare two providers if you can. For farm animals, quotes differ far more on weight caps and pickup fees than on the cremation itself.
  5. Confirm whether it's private, partitioned or communal, and get it on paper, since the three terms get muddled.
  6. Choose what the ashes come home in. For a hen, a small container is plenty, while a sheep or goat will fill a full-size scatter tube or urn.

Ways to remember a farm companion

Sandy desert soil is easier to dig than clay, but it is loose, and predators and wind can disturb a shallow site. Livestock burial rules inside town are not the same as those out in the county, so ask El Paso County before you dig. In the summer heat, a body cannot wait long, which is why many owners in the valley choose a removal service or cremation instead.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to El Paso to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in El Paso (roughly 18 miles from Horizon City) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is cremation common in Texas?

For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Horizon City follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Horizon City?

The closest communities we cover are Socorro (about 5 miles), El Paso (about 18 miles) and Sunland Park (about 26 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Horizon City too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the Horizon City climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In June, with highs near 97°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Can I get my animal's ashes back through fallen-stock collection?

No. Knackers, fallen-stock collectors and renderers process animals in bulk and nothing is returned. It's a respectful, lawful and inexpensive route, and some owners are comfortable with it. If you want your own animal's ashes, you need a private cremation, confirmed in writing, from a crematory that takes farm species.

Should I ask for a post-mortem before cremation?

If the death was sudden and you have other animals, it's often worth it. A post-mortem can show whether parasites, poisoning or an infectious disease is putting the remaining animals at risk, and it has to happen before cremation. Ask your vet quickly, because a body that has spent a day in the heat is much harder to examine usefully.
