Gonzales, Texas
Hobby-farm aftercare in Gonzales: the local picture
Sandy loam and post oak ground drain reasonably well around Gonzales, but river bottoms flood, and creek crossings can wash out after a big storm. With August highs near 98 degrees, a large carcass must be moved quickly. For an aging horse or cow, plan a firm, reachable place for euthanasia with your vet so a trailer can get close even after rain.
Gonzales County is ranching and poultry country, with cattle on rolling pasture, hay fields, goat herds and horse properties spread along the Guadalupe and San Marcos valleys. A service with the right equipment to move a large animal may be a long drive from Gonzales. Make the call promptly, then describe the ranch road, the gate and the terrain near the animal so the driver brings what is needed.
In a rural area like Gonzales, the biggest line on a cremation quote is often the journey rather than the cremation itself. Ask whether mileage is charged from the provider's base or from the edge of a free radius, and what happens if the crew needs a winch. Some keepers keep costs down by delivering the animal themselves, or by timing a collection with another owner nearby.
About 7,239 people live in Gonzales, which makes it the 222nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Austin, roughly 56 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Gonzales run from there.
Families in Gonzales often end up using a provider from Shiner (18 miles), Yoakum (23 miles) and Lockhart (29 miles, a larger centre). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Texas, and what they mean for your animal
With cremation at about 55.7%[1] for people in Texas, providers here serve a mixed market, and not all of them have met a goat. When you ring, describe the animal plainly: species, weight, horned or not, and whether it was euthanized. A provider who asks sensible follow-up questions has usually done this before.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Gonzales only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Gonzales weather and your animal's first hours
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August and September), don't plan on waiting until tomorrow. A 150 lb pig or goat holds heat long after death, and flies arrive fast. If collection will be delayed, lay bags of ice or frozen water bottles along the belly and flank under a light cover, never under a sealed plastic sheet, which traps heat. Hosing the body down doesn't help for long; shade does.
If you're planning a goodbye at home during the hot months (May, June, July, August and September), think about where the animal will be when the vet arrives. A shaded paddock corner or a barn with a wide door makes the next step, loading onto a trailer or into a van, much easier. Have a tarp, two helpers and a clear path ready, so the animal can be moved without delay once you've said goodbye.

Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Gonzales
For a small backyard flock, costs are modest: a single hen falls in the smallest pet band, and many keepers choose communal cremation. For a goat or sheep, the bigger variable is collection. A crew with a winch coming out to a farm near Gonzales can cost as much as the cremation itself, so ask what's included before you agree.

Livestock and pet rules in Texas
Composting is an approved route for dead stock in many places: in the 2014–2015 US bird flu outbreak it handled 85%[5] of poultry carcasses, according to the EPA. But it isn't allowed for every species everywhere, and a pile needs careful management. The pet-level picture for Texas is below; check the livestock rules before you build one.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Gonzales.
For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Gonzales can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
What to do first, second and third
- Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
- Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. A close companion can have a few minutes to look at and sniff the body if that seems to settle it, then take it where the others can't see.
- Call your vet when the animal died without warning or you don't know why. Certain illnesses of pigs, poultry, sheep and goats carry a reporting duty that comes ahead of everything else.
- Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. Everything else follows from that answer, because it narrows the field to fallen-stock collection, communal cremation or a private cremation.
- Weigh or estimate the weight honestly, then state it alongside the species as soon as you ring. Plenty of pet crematories set a limit far under what an adult pig or goat weighs.
- Ask for a written total covering cremation, collection, mileage and the urn before anyone sets off.
- Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.
Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm
Among ranch families in Gonzales County, the usual choice is a grave on the home place, if the county allows, or a truck to take the animal away. Cremation with ashes back is also an option through a few Texas crematories, at a higher cost driven by pounds and miles. A brand, an old halter or tail hair often becomes the family's keepsake.

Questions people ask
Does the Gonzales climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 98°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Why does the Gonzales page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Austin to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Austin (roughly 56 miles from Gonzales) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Gonzales?
Usually yes. Shiner is about 18 miles away, Yoakum is about 23 miles away and Lockhart is about 29 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Should the rest of the herd see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Goats, alpacas and donkeys in particular often settle better if a bonded companion is allowed a few minutes to see and sniff the body. Stay with them, then move the body out of sight before collection. Expect calling or pacing for a few days afterwards; steady routines help.
How big an urn do I need for a goat or sheep?
Plan on roughly a cubic inch of capacity for every pound your animal weighed[6]. A 70 lb pygmy goat then needs around 70 cubic inches and a 140 lb ewe around 140, more than most standard pet urns hold. Scattering most of it? A scatter tube plus a small keepsake urn works well. Our urn size calculator will work out the numbers.
