Lockhart, Texas
Where farm species go after a death near Lockhart
Few crematories in the region will take a horse, steer or llama singly, and price rises with each hundredweight and every mile on the road. Around Lockhart, families often set that beside a pasture grave where permitted, or beside a removal service. Many keep something small from the animal as well: a halter hung in the tack room, a braid of tail, an ear tag on a nail.
Sandy post-oak soils may drain quickly while low pasture along Plum Creek stays wet after storms, so access varies a lot from one place to the next. While a horse or cow is still on its feet, settle with your vet on a dry, reachable place for the end. Summer storms can also knock out power to wells and fans, so check water and shade for the rest of the herd.
A small town like Lockhart tends to have fewer rules about backyard animals within its limits, but that doesn't mean anything goes. Local bylaws can still ban livestock burial near houses or wells, and the wider rules for dead farm animals apply wherever you live. If you're on a small lot in town rather than acreage, cremation is usually the simplest legal path, even for a hen.
Lockhart is home to about 18,159 people, the 158th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Lockhart are based about 27 miles away in Austin, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Kyle (14 miles, a larger centre), San Marcos (16 miles, a larger centre) and Buda (17 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Texas
With cremation at about 55.7%[1] for people in Texas, providers here serve a mixed market, and not all of them have met a goat. When you ring, describe the animal plainly: species, weight, horned or not, and whether it was euthanized. A provider who asks sensible follow-up questions has usually done this before.
That Texas rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Lockhart only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Lockhart weather and your animal's first hours
Lockhart's long warm season (May, June, July, August and September) is also fly season, and flies find a body within minutes. An old cotton sheet or a few feed sacks draped over the animal keep them off without trapping heat. Check the body every hour or two if pickup is delayed, and keep the other animals from lying beside it in the sun.
On a 98°F day in August, a metal trailer or pickup bed turns into an oven. If you're delivering the animal yourself, go at first light, load in shade and drive straight there. Call ahead so the crematory is ready to receive your goat or pig instead of leaving it in a hot vehicle in the yard.

Budgeting in Lockhart for a pig, ewe or goat
Some costs around a farm death in Lockhart arrive before the crematory's: a farm call for euthanasia, a post-mortem if you want answers, occasionally a disease test. Ask your vet to itemize them. Then use our cremation cost calculator to add cremation, collection and the urn, so the whole bill is in one place before you commit.

Rules worth knowing in Texas
Before you dig anything for a pig, alpaca, goat or sheep, it helps to know who writes the rules. Usually it's the agriculture or environment authority rather than the local pet bylaws, because the worry is groundwater and disease moving between farms. The Texas notes below cover pets generally; your vet or a farm advisory service can confirm what livestock rules add on top.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lockhart.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Lockhart or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, second and third
- Say goodbye in your own way. Even when the farm is busy, you can find a few unhurried minutes in the paddock or barn.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs or any other scavenger while you're on the phone.
- Find a provider that takes your species at its weight. Ask your vet who they use nearby, or let us send you local options.
- Choose private, communal or collection, and ask for written confirmation of which one you've booked.
- Decide how the animal gets there. Collection from the farm costs extra; taking it in your own pickup or trailer often cuts the bill a good deal.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no rush to settle it today; plenty of keepers hold off on scattering until an anniversary or a change of season.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Caldwell County is ranch and farm country, with cattle pasture, hay meadows, goat operations and horse places spread across the post-oak hills around Lockhart. Hauling a large animal from these properties usually means a truck from Austin or farther away. A clear phone picture of the gate and lane can spare the driver a wasted run, along with a note on whether the ground is dry.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[1] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Lockhart follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lockhart?
Usually yes. Kyle is about 14 miles away, San Marcos is about 16 miles away and Buda is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Austin to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Austin (roughly 27 miles from Lockhart) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does the Lockhart climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 98°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
How long can I leave a dead goat or sheep before it's collected?
Not long. The rumen keeps fermenting after death, so goats, sheep and alpacas can bloat within hours in warm weather. Many US states expect dead livestock to be dealt with within 24-72 hours[5]. Keep the body shaded and loosely covered, and book collection or delivery the same day if you can.
Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
