DeSoto, Texas
Goats, pigs and backyard flocks in DeSoto
Summer heat south of Dallas leaves little breathing room after a large animal dies; a loss on a 97-degree afternoon needs a plan by evening. Spring brings the opposite trouble, when Ellis County's heavy clay soaks up storm water and turns into mud that can trap a truck for days. Pin a rendering contact and a cremation contact to the tack room wall now, while things are calm.
Many horse owners in DeSoto board at barns in Ellis County or southern Dallas County rather than at home. Sit down with the barn manager ahead of time and ask how they handle a death, whether they can book an individual cremation and who pays for collection. Ask them, too, to cut a forelock braid or keep the halter aside for you before the trailer pulls away.
Fallen-stock collection and rendering have long been the farm answer around DeSoto, and they're quick and inexpensive. But rendering plants are closing, and in many areas the truck no longer runs for a single small animal. If the collector does come, nothing is returned. For a named goat or pet pig, many families decide that's not the ending they want and look for a private cremation in a larger centre such as Grand Prairie.
DeSoto is home to about 56,681 people, the 69th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve DeSoto are based about 11 miles away in Grand Prairie, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Glenn Heights (3 miles), Duncanville (4 miles) and Lancaster (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Texas
Burial and cremation sit side by side in Texas, where cremation is chosen for around 55.7%[1] of people, often within one family. An older farmer may bury stock while a younger keeper wants a named goat cremated. Neither has to win. Some families cremate and then bury the ashes on the land, which honors both habits at once.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for DeSoto, not as a count of pets.
What the seasons mean for farm animal aftercare in DeSoto
Heat affects the living animals too. In August, pigs and heavily fleeced alpacas and sheep are prone to heat stress, and a sudden death in hot weather is worth mentioning to your vet in case others are at risk. If a planned euthanasia is coming up, book it for early morning, when the barn is coolest and the collection crew has the whole day to reach you.
In the hottest months (June, July, August and September), don't plan on waiting until tomorrow. A 150 lb pig or goat holds heat long after death, and flies arrive fast. If collection will be delayed, lay bags of ice or frozen water bottles along the belly and flank under a light cover, never under a sealed plastic sheet, which traps heat. Hosing the body down doesn't help for long; shade does.

Budgeting in DeSoto for a pig, ewe or goat
Expect the total in DeSoto to depend on four things: your animal's weight, private or communal, how the animal gets to the crematory and what the ashes come back in. Communal cremation, where nothing is returned, usually costs half or less. If you can deliver the animal yourself, the collection line on the quote may disappear altogether.

Burial, composting and reporting rules in Texas
Before you dig anything for a pig, alpaca, goat or sheep, it helps to know who writes the rules. Usually it's the agriculture or environment authority rather than the local pet bylaws, because the worry is groundwater and disease moving between farms. The Texas notes below cover pets generally; your vet or a farm advisory service can confirm what livestock rules add on top.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers DeSoto.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. DeSoto's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first day, step by step
- Stop and count. When two or more animals or birds have died inside a day or so and nothing obvious like a predator explains it, don't move anything yet.
- Put on gloves and keep the bodies away from the living stock. Birds go in two bags; bigger animals get covered where they've fallen.
- Ring the vet, or your national animal health agency, and describe exactly what you've seen. Bird flu, swine fevers and several sheep and goat diseases are notifiable in many countries.
- Wait for the all-clear before cremation, burial or composting. Testing may be offered, and a body may need to go to a laboratory first.
- Keep visitors and borrowed equipment off the property while you wait for answers, and clean boots and feeders whenever you move between pens.
- Once you're cleared, decide animal by animal. It's common to choose communal cremation for the bulk of a flock while giving one special bird a private cremation of its own.
A lasting place for your animal near DeSoto
Livestock is uncommon inside DeSoto's subdivisions, but rural Ellis County starts just to the south, with horse properties, hay meadows and small cow-calf herds around Ovilla, Red Oak and beyond. If your horses, goats or cattle live out there, the hauler needs to hear about the gate, the fence line, the state of the pasture after rain and the distance between the body and the county road.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from DeSoto?
Usually yes. Glenn Heights is about 3 miles away, Duncanville is about 4 miles away and Lancaster is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Grand Prairie to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Prairie (roughly 11 miles from DeSoto) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in DeSoto?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 97°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why does the DeSoto page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
Do sheep and goats need testing before cremation?
Not usually for a pet crematory. But if a sheep or goat dies unexpectedly, your vet may suggest a post-mortem, and in the US older sheep and goats can often be sampled for scrapie surveillance. Ask before the body leaves, because testing can't be done after cremation. A few crematories won't accept an animal suspected of a notifiable disease.
