Cypress, Texas
Hobby-farm aftercare in Cypress: the local picture
The prairie soils west of Cypress hold water after heavy rain, and low pastures near Cypress Creek may sit under water for several days. When a horse, donkey or cow at a boarding barn is nearing the end, the barn manager and your vet can agree on a paved or graveled place for the last visit and the pickup. Working that out early saves stress during a wet spell.
Several facilities across greater Houston take horses and grown cattle for individual cremation, with body weight and road distance setting most of the cost. Cypress-area owners may also consider rendering, while families with rural land farther out in Waller County sometimes choose burial where it is allowed. A braided forelock, a show ribbon or a favorite saddle pad often ends up in a shadow box.
Distances around Cypress make it sensible to plan aftercare for older stock ahead of time. If you have an aging ewe, a lame old wether or a pig past ten, ask a crematory in a larger centre such as Houston what they'd charge and how they'd collect, while there's no hurry. Keep their number with the vet's.
Cypress is one of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Cypress are based about 24 miles away in Houston, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Tomball (10 miles, a larger centre), Katy (15 miles, a larger centre) and Waller (15 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation habits in Texas, and what they mean for your animal
About 55.7%[1] of people in Texas are cremated, and the figure has been climbing for years. Farm animal aftercare has followed at its own pace. Burial on the farm is still common for stock, but more families now choose cremation for the animals they named: the pet goat, the old ewe, the pig that followed the children around the yard.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Texas figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Cypress tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around the seasons in Cypress
Wherever you are, the rule for a farm animal is the same: shade, cover and speed. A goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death and can bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat. Lay the animal on its side on straw or a tarp, cover it loosely and ask for collection within the day.

Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Cypress
Very few US providers publish prices for goats, sheep or pigs, so the table uses the closest published pet price bands by weight. For a pygmy goat, that means something like a large dog; for a 150 lb ewe or pot-bellied pig, the top band or an individual quote; for a llama or donkey, horse territory, where a 1,000 lb animal runs about $600-$1,000[2]. Collection and mileage from a farm around Cypress are usually extra.

Livestock law and pet rules in Texas
You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Texas; livestock rules can be stricter.

The first day, step by step
- Say goodbye in your own way. Even when the farm is busy, you can find a few unhurried minutes in the paddock or barn.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs and scavengers while you make calls.
- Find a provider that takes your species at its weight. Ask your vet who they use nearby, or let us send you local options.
- Choose private, communal or collection, and ask for written confirmation of which one you've booked.
- Decide how the animal gets there. Farm collection costs more; delivering by trailer or pickup yourself can save a lot.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now. Many keepers wait for a season or anniversary before scattering.
Remembering your animal in Cypress
Before the subdivisions arrived, much of Cypress was rice fields and cattle land on the edge of the Katy Prairie, and west of the Grand Parkway there are still horse properties, boarding barns and small acreages with goats and cattle. When a large animal dies, owners usually call their vet first and then a hauler who serves northwest Harris and Waller counties.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Cypress?
The closest communities we cover are Tomball (about 10 miles), Katy (about 15 miles) and Waller (about 15 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Cypress too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[1]. We show it on the Cypress page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Where are the providers that serve Cypress actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Houston, about 24 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Cypress and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I compost a dead goat or sheep instead?
Sometimes, depending on the species and where you live. Composting works well for poultry and is allowed for many livestock in the US, but a pile has to reach 135-140 F[5] and hold it for weeks, which needs a lot of dry bedding. California bans composting whole sheep and goats. For one named animal, most keepers find cremation simpler.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
How long until I get my farm animal's ashes back?
Many families get the ashes within one to two weeks. A large animal can take longer, because the cremation itself runs for hours and the provider may batch large-animal days. If the crematory is in a larger centre away from Cypress, add time for the return trip, or arrange to collect the ashes yourself.
