Hanahan, South Carolina
Hobby-farm aftercare in Hanahan: the local picture
Inside Hanahan there is little room for horses or livestock, but Berkeley County opens out north of Goose Creek, with pasture, timberland and small farms toward Moncks Corner and the lakes. If you board a horse or keep goats out there, collection after a death means sending a rig into the countryside, so give the service exact directions, the gate code and a phone number for whoever will meet them.
Owners of large animals near Hanahan often discover that services are scattered across the tri-county area and further inland. Cremating a horse-sized animal can mean a long trailer ride to a specialist facility. Before agreeing, find out what the quoted figure covers, whether ashes come back and how long that takes, and what lower-cost alternatives exist if individual cremation is out of reach for your budget.
In a small place like Hanahan, farm animals are part of ordinary life, and so is dealing with them when they die. Many neighbors still bury stock on their own land or call a fallen-stock collector. If you want your goat, sheep or pig's ashes back, though, you'll usually be looking to a crematory in a larger centre such as Hanahan, and that means planning for distance, a collection fee or a drive with a trailer.
Hanahan's population is around 22,415, the 25th-largest of the 29 South Carolina communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for North Charleston (4 miles, a larger centre), Goose Creek (4 miles, a larger centre) and Charleston (11 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

How South Carolina thinks about cremation
The cremation habit in South Carolina, now at roughly 56.1%[1] for people, is still spreading outward from the cities. Farm pets follow the same pattern. Keepers near town usually find cremation easy to book, while those further out may be steered towards the renderer or a backhoe by default. If cremation is what you want, ask for it by name.
That South Carolina rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Hanahan only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Hanahan
Heat affects the living animals too. In July, pigs and heavily fleeced alpacas and sheep are prone to heat stress, and a sudden death in hot weather is worth mentioning to your vet in case others are at risk. If a planned euthanasia is coming up, book it for early morning, when the barn is coolest and the collection crew has the whole day to reach you.
Hanahan summers are hot, with July highs averaging around 91°F. That shortens the time you have. The rumen of a goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death, and in heat the body can bloat within hours. Move your animal into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp, and cover it loosely against flies. Ask for same-day collection.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds
Very few US providers publish prices for goats, sheep or pigs, so the table uses the closest published pet price bands by weight. For a pygmy goat, that means something like a large dog; for a 150 lb ewe or pot-bellied pig, the top band or an individual quote; for a llama or donkey, horse territory, where a 1,000 lb animal runs about $600-$1,000[2]. Collection and mileage from a farm around Hanahan are usually extra.
The full price table by size is on our South Carolina page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What South Carolina allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
Composting is an approved route for dead stock in many places: in the 2014–2015 US bird flu outbreak it handled 85%[5] of poultry carcasses, according to the EPA. But it isn't allowed for every species everywhere, and a pile needs careful management. The pet-level picture for South Carolina is below; check the livestock rules before you build one.
South Carolina keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Hanahan.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the South Carolina level first; our South Carolina rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Hanahan or your HOA adds anything.
The first day, step by step
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's time for a few quiet minutes in the barn or paddock, even on a busy farm day.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs or any other scavenger while you're on the phone.
- Find a provider that takes your species at its weight. Your vet will know local options, or we can send you local options.
- Choose private, communal or collection, and ask for written confirmation of which one you've booked.
- Decide how the animal gets there. Farm collection costs more; delivering by trailer or pickup yourself can save a lot.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now. Many keepers wait for a season or anniversary before scattering.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Heat and water shape large-animal aftercare in this corner of the Lowcountry. In July a horse or cow should be picked up the same day if at all possible, and sandy, low-lying fields can sit under standing water after a tropical downpour. Tell the hauler plainly whether the ground is flooded or firm, and whether a paved drive reaches the barn, so the right equipment comes out.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in South Carolina?
For people, yes: about 56.1%[1] of South Carolina deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hanahan follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hanahan?
Usually yes. North Charleston is about 4 miles away, Goose Creek is about 4 miles away and Charleston is about 11 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Hanahan?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 91°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Is it cheaper to cremate two goats or sheep together?
Sometimes. Some providers charge by combined weight for a joint cremation of bonded animals, which can cost less than two separate private cremations; the ashes come back mixed in one urn. Others price each animal on its own. If both died together, or you'd like a companion's ashes added later, ask for a price on each option before you decide.
Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?
If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
What's the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation?
Private means your animal is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. Partitioned means several animals share the chamber but are kept apart, so the ashes are mostly, not certainly, your animal's. Communal means animals are cremated together and nothing is returned. For a named goat or pig, ask for private in writing if the ashes matter.
