Burlington, Iowa
Who can help with a goat, pig or sheep in Burlington
Des Moines County and the surrounding southeast Iowa countryside mix row crops with cattle, hogs, horses and small livestock farms, with more pasture and timber than you see up north. When a large animal dies, aftercare providers may travel from the Quad Cities, Iowa City or across the Great River Bridge in Illinois, so compare mileage charges as well as the base fee.
Commercial farms around Burlington handle most losses through rendering, the least costly route. People with a family horse, a donkey or an old show steer usually opt for private cremation to bring ashes home, even though it costs more. Since providers on the Iowa and Illinois sides may price very differently, collect at least two written quotes and check exactly what each one includes.
Distances around Burlington make it sensible to plan aftercare for older stock ahead of time. If you have an aging ewe, a lame old wether or a pig past ten, ask a crematory in a larger centre such as Burlington what they'd charge and how they'd collect, while there's no hurry. Keep their number with the vet's.
With roughly 23,336 residents, Burlington is the 23rd-largest of the 27 Iowa communities we cover.
Families in Burlington often end up using a provider from Galesburg (40 miles), Muscatine (42 miles) and Rock Island (54 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
In Iowa, about 63.6%[1] of people are cremated, a figure somewhere in the middle. Farming communities here often have a long habit of dealing with dead stock on the farm, through burial, composting or the renderer. That habit can make it feel unusual to ask for a private cremation for a goat. It isn't unusual any more, and any good provider will take the request seriously.
That Iowa rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Burlington only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the seasons mean for farm animal aftercare in Burlington
Composting, which many farms use for dead stock, slows right down in cold weather. Extension guidance says a carcass pile needs to reach 135-140 F[4] to work properly, and a pile started in the middle of a Burlington winter may struggle to heat up without plenty of dry bedding. For a single named animal, most people find cremation simpler than managing a pile through the freeze.
Snow and ice can delay collection, especially from farm tracks. If a winter storm is forecast and one of your animals is very old or unwell, ask your vet now what the plan would be. A body kept in an unheated shed stays in good condition for longer in the cold, but it can freeze to the ground or to bedding, so lay it on a tarp you can drag.

What farm animal cremation costs in Burlington
Weight drives the price, and farm species cover an enormous range: a bantam hen weighs a couple of pounds, a mature kunekune can top 200. Private cremation for pets over 90 lb is listed at about $350 to $450[5], and heavier animals are usually quoted individually. As a yardstick for anything very large, horse cremation works out to roughly $0.80/lb[6].

Livestock law and pet rules in Iowa
The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for Iowa below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.

A practical checklist for smallholders in Burlington
- If the death was expected, there's probably a plan already agreed with your vet. Ring to fix the pickup time, and if euthanasia is at home, arrange it for early morning while it's cool.
- If it was sudden, your first call is to the vet or farm vet. They can say whether tests are worth doing and whether the other animals might be in danger.
- Clear a path for collection. Get gates open and vehicles moved, then work out how a trailer or van will get to the animal.
- Line up help. Moving a 150 lb animal safely needs two people at minimum, along with a slide board, sled or tarp.
- Ask the provider three questions: whether the cremation is genuinely private, how they track which animal is which between the gate and the ashes, and when you'll get the ashes back.
- Check the rules before any burial or composting if that's what you'd rather do: which species, how deep, how far from water, and how soon.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
The bluffs and creek valleys around Burlington can make farm access tricky, with steep lanes and soft bottomland after rain. Before the crew comes, pick the flattest, firmest patch of ground within reach of the road and clear the way to it. In summer, a large animal's body breaks down fast in the humid heat, so start calling early; winter access is easier but slower on ice.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Burlington?
Usually yes. Galesburg is about 40 miles away, Muscatine is about 42 miles away and Rock Island is about 54 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Iowa?
For people, yes: about 63.6%[1] of Iowa deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Burlington follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Burlington?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Why can't I just bury a euthanized goat or pig in a shallow grave?
The euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can kill dogs, foxes, vultures and eagles that dig it up. That's why US drug labels have required a warning since 2003[8] that euthanized animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. For a single animal, cremation is usually the simplest safe answer.
Can I be present for my goat or pig's cremation?
Some providers offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be there as it begins. Large-animal crematories may only run big animals on certain days, so ask early. If being present isn't possible, you can still hold a short goodbye at the farm gate before collection and send a halter or a handful of hay along.
Is it normal to lose goats or sheep every year?
Sadly, yes. The USDA counted about 500,000 head[9] of adult goats and kids dying in the US in 2015, and sheep producers lost 6.8% of their flocks in 2019[10]. Losses come with keeping stock, which is why many smallholders plan aftercare early. Our livestock mortality planner helps you think it through.
