Bringing your farm pet's ashes home in Hobe Sound

- Keepsakes: fleece, feathers, halter

Hobe Sound, Florida
What arranging farm animal cremation in Hobe Sound is like
Hobe Sound has more horses than most coastal towns, with equestrian properties on larger lots nearby and the rural Jupiter Farms area just south in Palm Beach County. Cattle and hobby farms continue west toward Indiantown. For any horse, cow or goat, give the provider the gate width, the surface of the drive and the animal's exact location, whether stall, run-in shed or open field, before a truck sets out.
In South Florida heat a large animal that dies should leave the property within hours, and that is doubly true from June to September. Keep the body shaded with a breeze reaching it; plastic sheeting traps warmth. Sandy paddocks drain fast but low spots can pond after a storm, so mention them. Keep a printed hurricane-season plan with contacts in the feed room.
Distances around Hobe Sound make it sensible to plan aftercare for older stock ahead of time. If you have an aging ewe, a lame old wether or a pig past ten, ask a crematory in a larger centre such as Port St. Lucie what they'd charge and how they'd collect, while there's no hurry. Keep their number with the vet's.
With roughly 12,000 residents, Hobe Sound is the 152nd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Port St. Lucie, about 20 miles (32 km) away, which is where some providers serving Hobe Sound are based.
The closest communities we cover are Port Salerno (7 miles), Sewall's Point (10 miles) and Stuart (12 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Hobe Sound too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

The local attitude to cremation
Since cremation accounts for around 72.5%[1] of human deaths in Florida, relatives and neighbors are unlikely to find it strange that you want your pig's or alpaca's ashes. What may surprise them is the bill: a heavy animal is priced by weight, and collection from a farm adds more. Settle the budget early, and the decision is yours alone.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Hobe Sound tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
What the seasons mean for farm animal aftercare in Hobe Sound
In warm weather, keep the body shaded, loosely covered against flies and off sun-heated ground, and ask for same-day collection. In cold weather you have more time, but lay the animal on a tarp so it can be moved easily and doesn't freeze to bedding. Either way, keep dogs and scavengers well away.

Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Hobe Sound
Cremation isn't the only option, and it's worth knowing what the alternatives cost. A renderer's pickup fee typically runs about $75-$200[4] for a large animal where the service still exists, but only about 50%[5] of US states still have a rendering plant. Renting a backhoe for a deep burial costs roughly $250-$500[6]. Neither returns anything, which is why many people choose cremation for a named animal.

Before you bury or compost in Florida
In most places a pet goat or pig is still a goat or pig in the eyes of the law, so the rules written for farms apply to it. Those rules exist for water safety and disease control, and they tend to favor collection, rendering or cremation over burial. The notes below cover Florida in general; ask your vet or animal health office about your species.
Florida keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Hobe Sound.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Hobe Sound or your HOA adds anything.
If your animal dies today: a plan for Hobe Sound
- Move the body into shade, a cool barn or a shed, set it on its side over straw or a tarp, and drape something loose over it against flies. Never wrap it tightly in plastic.
- Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. Let a bonded companion see and sniff the body for a few minutes if it seems to help, then move it out of sight.
- Call your vet when the animal died without warning or you don't know why. Certain illnesses of pigs, poultry, sheep and goats carry a reporting duty that comes ahead of everything else.
- Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. Everything else follows from that answer, because it narrows the field to fallen-stock collection, communal cremation or a private cremation.
- Weigh or estimate the weight honestly and give it with the species on the first call. Many pet crematories cap weight well below a grown goat or pig.
- Ask for a written total that bundles the cremation, pickup, mileage and urn, and have it before any vehicle leaves.
- Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
Riders around Hobe Sound often keep horses into old age, whether they compete, hack out on trails or simply enjoy a retired gelding in the back paddock. When one dies, owners commonly ask for the horse to be cremated alone, with a memento saved, maybe a plait of tail or the halter plate. Arrange these with the farm or barn beforehand, and have transport included in the written price.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hobe Sound follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hobe Sound?
Usually yes. Port Salerno is about 7 miles away, Sewall's Point is about 10 miles away and Stuart is about 12 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Hobe Sound actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Port St. Lucie, about 20 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Hobe Sound and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I bring my goat or pig to the crematory myself?
Usually yes, and it often saves the whole collection fee. Call ahead to agree a time, confirm they accept the weight and ask how they unload. A pickup or small trailer with a ramp works well; lay the animal on a tarp so it can be slid rather than lifted. Bring a helper, and don't try to lift a heavy animal alone.
Should I ask for a post-mortem before cremation?
If the death was sudden and you have other animals, it's often worth it. A post-mortem can show whether parasites, poisoning or an infectious disease is putting the remaining animals at risk, and it has to happen before cremation. Ask your vet quickly, because a body that has spent a day in the heat is much harder to examine usefully.
Can I compost a dead goat or sheep instead?
Sometimes, depending on the species and where you live. Composting works well for poultry and is allowed for many livestock in the US, but a pile has to reach 135-140 F[8] and hold it for weeks, which needs a lot of dry bedding. California bans composting whole sheep and goats. For one named animal, most keepers find cremation simpler.
