Farm animal cremation in Bithlo

Bithlo, Florida

What arranging farm animal cremation in Bithlo is like

Bithlo is one of the few spots in Orange County where horses, goats, pigs and chickens are common on residential lots. Neighbors toward Christmas and Wedgefield keep cattle and horses too. When a large animal dies, regional providers can collect, but they will need clear directions, a description of the lot, and whether a truck can reach the animal without crossing soft ground.

Many Bithlo families have dealt with animal deaths on their own in years past, and some still consider burying on the property. Orange County rules can apply, particularly near wetlands and wells, so check before digging. Cremation is the other route, with communal cremation usually costing less and private cremation returning the ashes. Ask for a written total that includes the drive out from Orlando, since distance adds up.

Distances around Bithlo make it sensible to plan aftercare for older stock ahead of time. If you have an aging ewe, a lame old wether or a pig past ten, ask a crematory in a larger centre such as Orlando what they'd charge and how they'd collect, while there's no hurry. Keep their number with the vet's.

Bithlo's population is around 8,000, the 176th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Orlando, roughly 17 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Bithlo run from there.

For a second opinion on price, Avalon Park (4 miles), Alafaya (5 miles, a larger centre) and Waterford Lakes (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Bithlo routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

72.5%[1]

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Florida

In Florida, where roughly 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, scattering is a familiar idea, and that suits smallholders. Many local keepers take a goat's or sheep's ashes back out to the paddock rather than keeping them indoors. On your own land scattering generally needs no permit, which makes it an easy tradition to adopt even if you'd never bury stock.

We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Bithlo, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Bithlo weather and your animal's first hours

On a 90°F day in July, a metal trailer or pickup bed turns into an oven. If you're delivering the animal yourself, go at first light, load in shade and drive straight there. Call ahead so the crematory is ready to receive your goat or pig instead of leaving it in a hot vehicle in the yard.

Hot weather in Bithlo also changes the case for burial. Many places set a time limit after death (US state rules for livestock commonly allow 24-72 hours[4], and other countries set their own), and heat makes the shorter end the realistic one. Digging a deep grave by machine on a 90°F afternoon is hard work. Many keepers find cremation or collection easier to arrange quickly in summer.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds

Expect the total in Bithlo to depend on four things: your animal's weight, private or communal, how the animal gets to the crematory and what the ashes come back in. Communal cremation, where nothing is returned, usually costs half or less. If you can deliver the animal yourself, the collection line on the quote may disappear altogether.

Livestock and pet rules in Florida

In most places a pet goat or pig is still a goat or pig in the eyes of the law, so the rules written for farms apply to it. Those rules exist for water safety and disease control, and they tend to favor collection, rendering or cremation over burial. The notes below cover Florida in general; ask your vet or animal health office about your species.

To find your county or city office in Florida, start with the official Florida local government directory.

We keep Florida's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Florida rules summary. Before a home burial in Bithlo, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

A practical checklist for smallholders in Bithlo

  1. Ask the clinic what happens if you give no instructions. Many send farm species to a renderer or a communal cremation by default.
  2. Say plainly if the ashes should come home, then have the staff note "private cremation" on the record while you're still there.
  3. Raise the question of a post-mortem now. Arranging one is much simpler while the body remains at the clinic; once it has left for the crematory, it's a different matter.
  4. Find out who bills you. At one practice the cremation lands on the vet's invoice; at another you're given the crematory's number and pay them yourself.
  5. Ask for the halter, collar or tag to be kept for you, and a few feathers or a snip of fleece too if you haven't already taken one.
  6. Plan the evening at home. The others may call out for the animal that hasn't returned with you; a familiar routine and a little extra hay go a long way.

A lasting place for your animal near Bithlo

Bithlo's flatwoods are low and slow to drain, so ponds form in pastures after a string of storms and the roadside swales along sand lanes can swallow a truck's wheels. From May to October, heat speeds decomposition in a large body, so collection within hours matters. If the animal died in a waterlogged paddock, report the conditions right away so the crew brings tracks, a winch or a lighter vehicle.

Questions people ask

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Bithlo?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 90°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Will I have to travel to Orlando to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Orlando (roughly 17 miles from Bithlo) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Bithlo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bithlo?

Usually yes. Avalon Park is about 4 miles away, Alafaya is about 5 miles away and Waterford Lakes is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is it normal to lose goats or sheep every year?

Sadly, yes. The USDA counted about 500,000 head[6] of adult goats and kids dying in the US in 2015, and sheep producers lost 6.8% of their flocks in 2019[7]. Losses come with keeping stock, which is why many smallholders plan aftercare early. Our livestock mortality planner helps you think it through.

How big an urn do I need for a goat or sheep?

Plan on roughly a cubic inch of capacity for every pound your animal weighed[8]. A 70 lb pygmy goat then needs around 70 cubic inches and a 140 lb ewe around 140, more than most standard pet urns hold. Scattering most of it? A scatter tube plus a small keepsake urn works well. Our urn size calculator will work out the numbers.
