Mountain View, California
Finding a crematory that takes farm species near Mountain View
Mountain View itself has almost no large animals, but horse country is close. The hills of Los Altos Hills, Portola Valley and Woodside, a short drive west, have many horse properties, boarding stables and riding trails, and small farms and ranches remain in the foothills. When a horse, goat or other large animal dies on a hillside property there, share gate width, slope and ground conditions with any provider.
Fire season in the dry hills west of Mountain View is the main seasonal worry for large animal owners in the area. Evacuating horses and livestock from narrow hill roads takes planning. Winter rain can make steep pastures muddy and hard for trucks to reach. If you care for an older horse or a few goats nearby, planning aftercare in advance saves a rushed decision.
Distance from a crematory is why timing matters so much in rural areas around Mountain View. Ruminants like goats, sheep and alpacas start to bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat for a long time. If the nearest provider that takes farm species is a long drive away, call them before you do anything else, then keep the animal shaded, covered and off the bare ground while you wait.
Mountain View's population is around 85,438, the 93rd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. San Jose, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Mountain View run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Los Altos (2 miles), Sunnyvale (3 miles) and Los Altos Hills (3 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Mountain View routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
70.5%[1]
The NFDA projected California's cremation rate at 70.5% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
We built the this numbers from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in California
About 70.5%[1] of people in California are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary. For small farm species the effect is practical: pet crematories are more numerous and more used to unusual requests, from a hen in a shoebox to two bonded wethers cremated together. For a larger animal, you may still need an equine or large-animal crematory, and those are spread more thinly.
For the California figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Mountain View rather than as pet data.
When the weather sets the timetable in Mountain View
In a gentle climate the grass keeps growing, and some keepers in Mountain View scatter ashes in a paddock that will be grazed again, which some find comforting and others don't. If you'd rather the spot stays undisturbed, choose a corner outside the grazing: under a hedge, beside the barn or at the foot of a gatepost.
Mountain View's climate is fairly mild, which gives you a little breathing room. A goat or sheep laid on its side in a cool, shaded barn and loosely covered will keep for several hours while you gather yourself and make calls. It's still wise to arrange collection within the day, because ruminants bloat even in moderate weather and a heavy body holds its own heat.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds
For a small backyard flock, costs are modest: a single hen falls in the smallest pet band, and many keepers choose communal cremation. For a goat or sheep, the bigger variable is collection. A crew with a winch coming out to a farm near Mountain View can cost as much as the cremation itself, so ask what's included before you agree.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for California: California costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you bury or compost in California
Two things catch hobby farmers out: time limits and disease reporting. Many places expect a dead farm animal to be dealt with within a day or two, and some illnesses in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before the body goes anywhere. Here's what applies to pets generally in California; your vet can confirm the livestock side.

What to do when a farm animal dies in Mountain View
- Say goodbye in your own way. Even when the farm is busy, you can find a few unhurried minutes in the paddock or barn.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs and scavengers while you make calls.
- Find a provider that takes your species at its weight. Ask your vet who they use nearby, or let us send you local options.
- Choose private, communal or collection, and ask for written confirmation of which one you've booked.
- Decide how the animal gets there. Farm collection costs more; delivering by trailer or pickup yourself can save a lot.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now. Many keepers wait for a season or anniversary before scattering.
Keeping your goat, pig or hen close
For large animals in the foothills west of Mountain View, options usually include individual cremation with ashes returned, communal cremation and rendering for commercial stock. Burial on hillside properties may be restricted. Individual cremation means transport to a facility some distance away, and Peninsula traffic can slow a heavy truck. Ask for a written total that includes collection and the container the ashes come back in.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to San Jose to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in San Jose (roughly 11 miles from Mountain View) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Mountain View?
The closest communities we cover are Los Altos (about 2 miles), Sunnyvale (about 3 miles) and Los Altos Hills (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Mountain View too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Mountain View page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 70.5%[1] of California residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Mountain View climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In September, with highs near 75°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is a donkey treated like a horse or like livestock for burial?
It varies. Many rules group donkeys with horses, and in England equines are the notable exception to the ban on burying farm animals. Elsewhere, donkeys may fall under general livestock rules with depth and distance requirements. A standard donkey is also heavy enough to need an equine crematory. Check the rules for your area before deciding.
Can I bury my pet goat or sheep on my land in California?
Often yes, with conditions such as a time limit, a minimum depth and distances from wells, streams and property lines. Livestock rules usually apply to a pet goat or sheep just as they do to a herd, and cities can ban burial inside their limits. If your animal was euthanized, bury it deep or choose cremation.
