Colma, California
Where farm species go after a death near Colma
The San Mateo coast has a working farm belt of pumpkins, flowers, horses and small herds, reached from Colma over Highway 1 or Highway 92. Those roads twist, and winter storms can close them briefly with slides or flooding. If your horse or herd lives out that way, make sure the property owner knows your wishes for aftercare, whether that is private cremation, a communal service or removal only.
In a town devoted to remembrance, it may feel natural to want a lasting marker for a large animal that meant a great deal. Many horse and farm-animal owners keep something tangible: a braid, a nameplate, a photograph taken at the stable. Some ask for part of the ashes to be returned in a small container even when the rest is scattered. Say what you want before the animal is moved.
In a rural area like Colma, the biggest line on a cremation quote is often the journey rather than the cremation itself. Ask whether mileage is charged from the provider's base or from the edge of a free radius, and what happens if the crew needs a winch. Some keepers keep costs down by delivering the animal themselves, or by timing a collection with another owner nearby.
Colma is home to about 1,385 people, the 307th-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Colma are based about 7 miles away in San Francisco, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Daly City (1 miles, a larger centre), South San Francisco (3 miles, a larger centre) and Brisbane (3 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Colma too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
In California, where roughly 70.5%[1] of people are cremated, scattering is a familiar idea, and that suits smallholders. Many local keepers take a goat's or sheep's ashes back out to the paddock rather than keeping them indoors. On your own land scattering generally needs no permit, which makes it an easy tradition to adopt even if you'd never bury stock.
The California percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Colma, not as a count of pets.
Colma weather and your animal's first hours
Mild, damp spells are when mud becomes the problem on small farms around Colma. A van can sink in a soft paddock, so think about moving a heavy animal to hard standing on a tarp or sled, with help, before the vehicle arrives. Warn the provider about soft ground in advance; they may bring a smaller vehicle or boards.
Even in a mild climate, the warmest weeks deserve care. Keep the body out of direct sun, off bare concrete that has been heating all day, and away from dogs and scavengers. If there's any chance of disease, especially several deaths in a backyard flock, don't move or bury anything until you've spoken to your vet.

What farm animal cremation costs in Colma
Very few US providers publish prices for goats, sheep or pigs, so the table uses the closest published pet price bands by weight. For a pygmy goat, that means something like a large dog; for a 150 lb ewe or pot-bellied pig, the top band or an individual quote; for a llama or donkey, horse territory, where a 1,000 lb animal runs about $600-$1,000[2]. Collection and mileage from a farm around Colma are usually extra.

Burial, composting and reporting rules in California
Composting is an approved route for dead stock in many places: in the 2014–2015 US bird flu outbreak it handled 85%[5] of poultry carcasses, according to the EPA. But it isn't allowed for every species everywhere, and a pile needs careful management. The pet-level picture for California is below; check the livestock rules before you build one.
California keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Colma.
The rules that apply across California (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our California page. Colma may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first, second and third
- Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
- Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. Let a bonded companion see and sniff the body for a few minutes if it seems to help, then move it out of sight.
- Call your vet when the animal died without warning or you don't know why. Certain illnesses of pigs, poultry, sheep and goats carry a reporting duty that comes ahead of everything else.
- Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. That one choice decides which providers can help: private cremation, communal cremation or fallen-stock collection.
- Weigh or estimate the weight honestly, then state it alongside the species as soon as you ring. Plenty of pet crematories set a limit far under what an adult pig or goat weighs.
- Ask for a written total covering cremation, collection, mileage and the urn before anyone sets off.
- Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.
Keeping your goat, pig or hen close
There is no pasture land in Colma, and large animals are rare anywhere on the northern Peninsula. Families nearby who own horses or livestock usually keep them over the hills on the coast around Half Moon Bay and Pescadero, or farther south in the county. Should an animal die at a boarding stable or farm there, the arrangements will generally be made from that location, so ask the barn manager what they normally use.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Colma actually based?
Some are local, and some run from San Francisco, about 7 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Colma and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Colma?
Usually yes. Daly City is about 1 miles away, South San Francisco is about 3 miles away and Brisbane is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Colma's weather affect farm animal aftercare?
September is the hottest month in Colma, with average highs around 75°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Is cremation common in California?
For people, yes: about 70.5%[1] of California deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Colma follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Do sheep and goats need testing before cremation?
Not usually for a pet crematory. But if a sheep or goat dies unexpectedly, your vet may suggest a post-mortem, and in the US older sheep and goats can often be sampled for scrapie surveillance. Ask before the body leaves, because testing can't be done after cremation. A few crematories won't accept an animal suspected of a notifiable disease.
Why can't I just bury a euthanized goat or pig in a shallow grave?
The euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can kill dogs, foxes, vultures and eagles that dig it up. That's why US drug labels have required a warning since 2003[6] that euthanized animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. For a single animal, cremation is usually the simplest safe answer.
