Since cremation accounts for around 76.0%[1] of human deaths in Germany, relatives and neighbors are unlikely to find it strange that you want your pig's or alpaca's ashes. What may surprise them is the bill: a heavy animal is priced by weight, and collection from a farm adds more. Settle the budget early, and the decision is yours alone.

Before you bury or compost in North Rhine-Westphalia
A rough rule holds almost everywhere: the bigger the animal, the more the law cares where it ends up. A hen or duck is treated much like any small pet. A 150 lb ewe or a pig brings setbacks from wells, depth requirements and sometimes an outright ban. Here's what North Rhine-Westphalia says about pets in general; expect a large farm species to be held to a higher standard.
In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.
What to do first, second and third
- Say goodbye in your own way. Even when the farm is busy, you can find a few unhurried minutes in the paddock or barn.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs or any other scavenger while you're on the phone.
- Find a provider that takes your species at its weight. Your vet will know local options, or we can send you local options.
- Choose private, communal or collection, then get it in writing so there's no doubt about which one is booked.
- Decide how the animal gets there. Farm collection costs more; delivering by trailer or pickup yourself can save a lot.
- Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now. Many keepers wait for a season or anniversary before scattering.

Why does the Cologne page quote a human cremation rate?

There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

No. Knackers, fallen-stock collectors and renderers process animals in bulk and nothing is returned. It's a respectful, lawful and inexpensive route, and some owners are comfortable with it. If you want your own animal's ashes, you need a private cremation, confirmed in writing, from a crematory that takes farm species.
