The local attitude to cremation
About 76.0%[1] of people in Germany are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary. For small farm species the effect is practical: pet crematories are more numerous and more used to unusual requests, from a hen in a shoebox to two bonded wethers cremated together. For a larger animal, you may still need an equine or large-animal crematory, and those are spread more thinly.

The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for North Rhine-Westphalia below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.
In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.
What to do when a farm animal dies in Munster
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's time for a few quiet minutes in the barn or paddock, even on a busy farm day.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs or any other scavenger while you're on the phone.

Why does the Munster page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Munster?
Usually yes. Dortmund is about 32 miles away, Essen is about 44 miles away and Dusseldorf is about 62 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Dortmund to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Dortmund (roughly 32 miles from Munster) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
What's the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation?
Private means your animal is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. Partitioned means several animals share the chamber but are kept apart, so the ashes are mostly, not certainly, your animal's. Communal means animals are cremated together and nothing is returned. For a named goat or pig, ask for private in writing if the ashes matter.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
How much ash will I get back from a goat, sheep or hen?
Cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[3]. A 70 lb pygmy goat returns roughly two to three and a half pounds of ash; a 160 lb alpaca returns five to eight.
