Hitchcock, Texas
Who can help with a goat, pig or sheep in Hitchcock
Hardly any Texas operators offer solo cremation for livestock, so Galveston County owners also look at removal, or a grave on their acreage if the rules there allow. Haul distance and weight drive the price. Families often save a halter, a horseshoe or a lock of mane, and some frame a photo of the animal grazing near the bayou beside it.
Prairie around Hitchcock is table-flat and sheds water poorly, and after a tropical downpour a pasture may sit under water for days. Humid Gulf summers shorten the window for removal to hours. If a horse or cow is old or ill, choose a raised spot near the driveway with your vet in advance, and plan around the storm season if the timing allows.
A small town like Hitchcock tends to have fewer rules about backyard animals within its limits, but that doesn't mean anything goes. Local bylaws can still ban livestock burial near houses or wells, and the wider rules for dead farm animals apply wherever you live. If you're on a small lot in town rather than acreage, cremation is usually the simplest legal path, even for a hen.
Hitchcock's population is around 7,722, the 216th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Houston, about 35 miles (57 km) away, which is where some providers serving Hitchcock are based.
For a second opinion on price, La Marque (3 miles, a larger centre), Bayou Vista (5 miles) and Santa Fe (6 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Hitchcock routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
55.7%[1]
The NFDA projected Texas's cremation rate at 55.7% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension).

Cremation rates in Texas and your animal
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Texas, at about 55.7%[1], but burial still has deep roots, especially in farming country. You'll find both traditions among smallholders. Neither is more proper than the other for a goat or sheep; what matters is what the rules allow for that species on your land and what feels right to you.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Hitchcock rather than as pet data.
When the weather sets the timetable in Hitchcock
Wherever you are, the rule for a farm animal is the same: shade, cover and speed. A goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death and can bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat. Lay the animal on its side on straw or a tarp, cover it loosely and ask for collection within the day.

Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn
Expect the total in Hitchcock to depend on four things: your animal's weight, private or communal, how the animal gets to the crematory and what the ashes come back in. Communal cremation, where nothing is returned, usually costs half or less. If you can deliver the animal yourself, the collection line on the quote may disappear altogether.

Livestock law and pet rules in Texas
You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Texas; livestock rules can be stricter.

Step by step, from the field to the ashes
- Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
- Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. A close companion can have a few minutes to look at and sniff the body if that seems to settle it, then take it where the others can't see.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden or unexplained. Some diseases in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before anything else happens.
- Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. Everything else follows from that answer, because it narrows the field to fallen-stock collection, communal cremation or a private cremation.
- Weigh or estimate the weight honestly and give it with the species on the first call. Many pet crematories cap weight well below a grown goat or pig.
- Ask for a written total that bundles the cremation, pickup, mileage and urn, and have it before any vehicle leaves.
- Take keepsakes before collection: an ear tag, the collar or halter, a handful of feathers or a snip of fleece.
A lasting place for your animal near Hitchcock
Hitchcock has more open land than most of mainland Galveston County, and horses, cattle and goats graze on small acreages and pastures along the roads toward the bay. Pickup for a dead horse or cow in Hitchcock will usually come from the Houston side or beyond. Tell the service whether your gate takes a trailer and whether the ground has dried since the last rain.

Questions people ask
Why does the Hitchcock page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[1] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hitchcock?
Usually yes. La Marque is about 3 miles away, Bayou Vista is about 5 miles away and Santa Fe is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Where are the providers that serve Hitchcock actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Houston, about 35 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Hitchcock and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
Can I be present for my goat or pig's cremation?
Some providers offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be there as it begins. Large-animal crematories may only run big animals on certain days, so ask early. If being present isn't possible, you can still hold a short goodbye at the farm gate before collection and send a halter or a handful of hay along.
Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
