Goat, pig and alpaca aftercare in North Las Vegas, Nevada

North Las Vegas, Nevada

Finding a crematory that takes farm species near North Las Vegas

There are few large animals in North Las Vegas itself, but the valley has pockets of horse property, particularly in the northwest and in rural-zoned areas, and ranches and farms lie farther out in places like the Moapa Valley and Pahrump. If your horse, goat, sheep or donkey is kept on one of these properties, tell us the address and describe the gate and ground access.

Southern Nevada has a strong Western riding culture, and many horse owners here keep animals for trail riding in the desert or for rodeo and ranch events. Few providers in southern Nevada cremate an animal that size individually, so expect travel and a higher price if you want the ashes. Asking about options ahead of time makes the day itself easier.

Some vets in North Las Vegas may be willing to hold a small animal such as a hen or a young kid in a cold room for a day while you decide. For anything larger that's rarely possible. Know before you call whether you're asking for storage, collection or simply advice, and the conversation will go quicker.

North Las Vegas is home to about 296,653 people, the 3rd-largest of the 11 Nevada communities we cover. Las Vegas, roughly 9 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover North Las Vegas run from there.

The closest communities we cover are Las Vegas (9 miles, a larger centre), Summerlin (14 miles) and Henderson (18 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to North Las Vegas too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How Nevada thinks about cremation

With cremation chosen for about 80.7%[1] of people in Nevada, local families tend to expect it for their animals too. On a smallholding, that expectation meets livestock law: the options for a goat, sheep or pig are set by rules written for farms, not for pets. Cremation fits comfortably inside those rules almost everywhere, which is one more reason it's the common choice here.

The Nevada percentage above is from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for North Las Vegas, not as a count of pets.

Heat, cold and timing in North Las Vegas

North Las Vegas's long warm season (May, June, July, August and September) is also fly season, and flies find a body within minutes. An old cotton sheet or a few feed sacks draped over the animal keep them off without trapping heat. Check the body every hour or two if pickup is delayed, and keep the other animals from lying beside it in the sun.

Backyard flocks feel North Las Vegas's heat as well. Hens lost in a heat wave should be bagged, kept cool and dealt with promptly, and several deaths at once are worth a call to your vet, since heat and disease can look alike at first. A single bird is simple to take to a pet crematory; ask for a small container if you'd like the ashes, because a hen returns only a spoonful or two.

How much to budget in North Las Vegas

By our estimate, private pet cremation in the US gets cheaper per pound as animals get heavier, falling to about $4 a pound at 100 lb[4]. Large-animal cremation drops further, to about $0.80/lb[5] for a horse. A goat or ewe sits between those two, which is why a quote for a farm pet in North Las Vegas can look high as a total but fair per pound.

Livestock and pet rules in Nevada

If your animal was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body and can poison scavenging wildlife, and US drug labels have warned since 2003[7] that such animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. That alone rules out a shallow grave. The notes below cover the general rules in Nevada; cremation meets all of them.

To find your county or city office in Nevada, start with the official Nevada local government directory.

We keep Nevada's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Nevada rules summary. Before a home burial in North Las Vegas, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.

What to do first, second and third

  1. Tell your child soon, in plain words. Saying "Your goat died this morning" beats a vaguer phrase that leaves a small child expecting the animal to turn up again.
  2. Let them choose whether to see the body. Covered with a blanket, with only the head showing, is usually gentle enough for school-age children.
  3. Give them a job: brushing the coat one last time, choosing the halter to keep, or picking flowers to leave at the gate.
  4. Time the collection around them. One child will want to see the crew leave; another is better off at a friend's house or in class while it happens. Tell the crew you'd like a pickup with no rush.
  5. If the animal was a club or show project, let the leader know. This won't be the first young member they've seen through it, and they may offer a tribute at the following meeting.
  6. Plan something for when the ashes come home: a scattering along the fence, a tree to plant, or a small urn for a shelf in their room.

Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm

Extreme heat means a large animal that dies in a Mojave summer needs attention within hours, not days. Shade and cover the body, keep other animals away, and call early in the day if you can. Burying a horse or cow is difficult in caliche soil and rarely practical on a suburban lot, so most owners look at collection and cremation or other disposal options.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Las Vegas to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Las Vegas (roughly 9 miles from North Las Vegas) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Why does the North Las Vegas page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 80.7%[1] of Nevada residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Which nearby towns can I compare with North Las Vegas?

The closest communities we cover are Las Vegas (about 9 miles), Summerlin (about 14 miles) and Henderson (about 18 miles). Providers based in those places often serve North Las Vegas too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the North Las Vegas climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 105°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Can I compost a dead goat or sheep instead?

Sometimes, depending on the species and where you live. Composting works well for poultry and is allowed for many livestock in the US, but a pile has to reach 135-140 F[8] and hold it for weeks, which needs a lot of dry bedding. California bans composting whole sheep and goats. For one named animal, most keepers find cremation simpler.

How much does it cost to cremate a goat in North Las Vegas?

A small goat of 50 to 80 lb usually falls in the same range as a large dog, roughly $200 to $300 for a private cremation in the US. A full-size dairy or meat goat is often quoted individually, and farm collection and mileage are extra. Ask any North Las Vegas provider for a written total that separates the cremation from the collection.
