When a hobby-farm animal dies in Ridgeland

Ridgeland, Mississippi

Hobby-farm aftercare in Ridgeland: the local picture

Low ground near the Reservoir and the Pearl River can stay soggy long after heavy rain, which makes it hard to get a winch truck close to a barn. Walk the route before you ever need it. During summer, a horse, mule or steer should be moved or buried promptly, so keep the animal shaded and start calling as early in the morning as you can.

Ridgeland is mostly suburban, yet Madison County's horse farms, cattle pasture and hobby farms sit just north and east of town. Owners who lose a large animal usually lean on their vet for the first steps, then choose what happens next based on land, cost and distance. Being close to the metro gives Ridgeland owners more choices than rural Mississippi, but always ask what the transport portion costs.

Distances around Ridgeland make it sensible to plan aftercare for older stock ahead of time. If you have an aging ewe, a lame old wether or a pig past ten, ask a crematory in a larger centre such as Ridgeland what they'd charge and how they'd collect, while there's no hurry. Keep their number with the vet's.

Ridgeland is home to about 24,750 people, the 16th-largest of the 21 Mississippi communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Madison (4 miles), Jackson (9 miles, a larger centre) and Pearl (11 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Ridgeland routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

<40%[1]

As of 2025, Mississippi was the only US state with a cremation rate below 40%, per CANA's 2026 report.

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance.

The local attitude to cremation

Where cremation covers only about <40%[1] of human deaths, as in Mississippi, the nearest pet crematory may be further off than you'd like, and fewer still take farm species. Call one before you need it. Five minutes on the phone while your animal is well tells you the weight limit, the collection radius and the price, which is far easier than finding out on a hard day.

That Mississippi rate is a human one, published by Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025). We quote it for Ridgeland only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Heat, cold and timing in Ridgeland

Heat affects the living animals too. In August, pigs and heavily fleeced alpacas and sheep are prone to heat stress, and a sudden death in hot weather is worth mentioning to your vet in case others are at risk. If a planned euthanasia is coming up, book it for early morning, when the barn is coolest and the collection crew has the whole day to reach you.

Ridgeland's long warm season (June, July, August and September) is also fly season, and flies find a body within minutes. An old cotton sheet or a few feed sacks draped over the animal keep them off without trapping heat. Check the body every hour or two if pickup is delayed, and keep the other animals from lying beside it in the sun.

Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn

Weight drives the price, and farm species cover an enormous range: a bantam hen weighs a couple of pounds, a mature kunekune can top 200. Private cremation for pets over 90 lb is listed at about $350 to $450[4], and heavier animals are usually quoted individually. As a yardstick for anything very large, horse cremation works out to roughly $0.80/lb[5].

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Mississippi: Mississippi costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you bury or compost in Mississippi

Two things catch hobby farmers out: time limits and disease reporting. Many places expect a dead farm animal to be dealt with within a day or two, and some illnesses in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before the body goes anywhere. Here's what applies to pets generally in Mississippi; your vet can confirm the livestock side.

The official Mississippi local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Ridgeland.

The rules that apply across Mississippi (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Mississippi page. Ridgeland may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

If your animal dies today: a plan for Ridgeland

  1. Check the time. In warm weather, aim to have your animal collected or delivered the same day. Ruminants bloat quickly.
  2. Lay the body on a tarp that's sturdy enough to pull, and prop the head up a little if you can; loading will go much more smoothly afterwards.
  3. Call a vet if more than one animal has died or anything seems unusual, especially in a backyard flock or a pig.
  4. Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Ask about chamber size, lifting gear and the collection radius.
  5. Get the price in writing, including any winch, after-hours or mileage charges.
  6. Watch the others. Goats, alpacas and donkeys may call or pace for days. Keep routines steady and give the closest companion extra time.

Ways to remember a farm companion

Many horses connected to Ridgeland live at boarding stables in the surrounding county rather than at their owners' homes. If yours is boarded, ask the barn manager now what they normally do when a horse dies, which vet they use and who hauls. Most barns have a plan, and learning it on a calm day spares you a scramble on the worst one.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ridgeland?

Usually yes. Madison is about 4 miles away, Jackson is about 9 miles away and Pearl is about 11 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Ridgeland?

There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

How do Mississippi attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025) puts the Mississippi human cremation rate at about <40%[1]. We show it on the Ridgeland page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Do I need to report a dead chicken or duck in Ridgeland?

Not usually for a single bird with an obvious cause, such as old age or a fox. But unexplained deaths, especially several birds in a short time, should be reported to your vet or state animal health office because of bird flu, which has affected 179 million birds[7] across all 50 states since 2022. Don't move or bury the birds until you've asked.

Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?

Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.

Why can't I just bury a euthanized goat or pig in a shallow grave?

The euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can kill dogs, foxes, vultures and eagles that dig it up. That's why US drug labels have required a warning since 2003[8] that euthanized animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. For a single animal, cremation is usually the simplest safe answer.
