South Holland, Illinois
Where farm species go after a death near South Holland
South Holland once had wide farm fields, famously used for growing onion sets, but today it is almost entirely suburban, and large animals are rare within the village. Residents who keep horses, goats or a few sheep usually board them to the south in Will County or across the state line in northwest Indiana. The boarding barn is the natural first contact if one of them dies.
For a horse or cow, having the animal cremated individually and the ashes returned is the costliest route by a wide margin. Communal cremation or a rendering service is much less expensive but returns nothing. If you want a middle way, some providers can return a small portion. Ask for a written figure covering the whole job, and keep a horseshoe or a bit of mane.
In a rural area like South Holland, the biggest line on a cremation quote is often the journey rather than the cremation itself. Ask whether mileage is charged from the provider's base or from the edge of a free radius, and what happens if the crew needs a winch. Some keepers keep costs down by delivering the animal themselves, or by timing a collection with another owner nearby.
South Holland's population is around 20,749, the 117th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve South Holland are based about 19 miles away in Chicago, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Dolton (2 miles), Harvey (3 miles) and Calumet City (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Illinois, at about 60.2%[1], but burial still has deep roots, especially in farming country. You'll find both traditions among smallholders. Neither is more proper than the other for a goat or sheep; what matters is what the rules allow for that species on your land and what feels right to you.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Illinois figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in South Holland tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Planning around the seasons in South Holland
South Holland winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March and December. Cold gives you more time after a death, but it also freezes the ground, and a grave big enough for a sheep or goat may be impossible to dig until spring. That's one of the main reasons local hobby farmers choose cremation in winter, even when they'd normally bury.
Winter in South Holland is also when a frozen water trough or a hard night can take a vulnerable animal suddenly. If you find a goat or sheep dead in the morning after a cold snap and the cause isn't obvious, it's still worth a call to your vet. Some losses in cold weather are simply age and exposure; others are illnesses the rest of the herd might share.

Budgeting in South Holland for a pig, ewe or goat
Weight drives the price, and farm species cover an enormous range: a bantam hen weighs a couple of pounds, a mature kunekune can top 200. Private cremation for pets over 90 lb is listed at about $350 to $450[4], and heavier animals are usually quoted individually. As a yardstick for anything very large, horse cremation works out to roughly $0.80/lb[5].
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Illinois: Illinois costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules worth knowing in Illinois
Before you dig anything for a pig, alpaca, goat or sheep, it helps to know who writes the rules. Usually it's the agriculture or environment authority rather than the local pet bylaws, because the worry is groundwater and disease moving between farms. The Illinois notes below cover pets generally; your vet or a farm advisory service can confirm what livestock rules add on top.
To find your county or city office in Illinois, start with the official Illinois local government directory.
We keep Illinois's burial and scattering rules in one place: the Illinois rules summary. Before a home burial in South Holland, also ask the city whether local ordinances add anything.
Step by step, from the field to the ashes
- Stop and count. When two or more animals or birds have died inside a day or so and nothing obvious like a predator explains it, don't move anything yet.
- Put on gloves and keep the bodies away from the living stock. Birds go in two bags; bigger animals get covered where they've fallen.
- Ring the vet, or your national animal health agency, and describe exactly what you've seen. Bird flu, swine fevers and several sheep and goat diseases are notifiable in many countries.
- Wait for the all-clear before you cremate, bury or compost anything. You may be offered testing, and one of the bodies might have to go off to a lab first.
- Keep visitors and borrowed equipment off the property until you know more, and scrub boots and feeders between pens.
- Once you're cleared, decide animal by animal. It's common to choose communal cremation for the bulk of a flock while giving one special bird a private cremation of its own.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Handling a large animal's death at a barn away from home means someone else may be on site before you are. Ask the barn to keep the body shaded in summer, to tell the removal crew which gate to use, and to have a tractor ready if the body lies far out in the field. Soggy spring ground and frozen winter ground both slow the job.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 19 miles from South Holland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in South Holland?
January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 85°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from South Holland?
Usually yes. Dolton is about 2 miles away, Harvey is about 3 miles away and Calumet City is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the South Holland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I bury my pet goat or sheep on my land in Illinois?
Often yes, with conditions such as a time limit, a minimum depth and distances from wells, streams and property lines. Livestock rules usually apply to a pet goat or sheep just as they do to a herd, and cities can ban burial inside their limits. If your animal was euthanized, bury it deep or choose cremation.
How long can I leave a dead goat or sheep before it's collected?
Not long. The rumen keeps fermenting after death, so goats, sheep and alpacas can bloat within hours in warm weather. Many US states expect dead livestock to be dealt with within 24-72 hours[7]. Keep the body shaded and loosely covered, and book collection or delivery the same day if you can.
