Weston, Florida
Who can help with a goat, pig or sheep in Weston
The land around Weston sits just above the Everglades water table, and in the wet season paddocks in Southwest Ranches and Davie can flood quickly. Moving a big body out of a flooded paddock sometimes needs a winch or a skid loader, and in the heat, time is short. Talk with your barn manager in advance about which gate and lane a truck would use when fields are soaked.
For Weston families with a horse at a ranchette nearby or a couple of goats on a friend's land, the choices after a death include an individual cremation that sends the ashes home, a communal one, rendering and, where the landowner and town allow it, burial on the property. The individual option costs the most for a large body. Ask each provider for a breakdown of collection, cremation and ash return.
Your local vet in Weston is probably the most useful person you can call. Rural vets deal with sheep, goats and pigs every week, know which crematories will take them and often know the collectors by name. Don't be shy about asking what they'd do with their own animal, or whether a neighbor with a tractor and front loader might help move a heavy body to a trailer.
With roughly 69,588 residents, Weston is the 46th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Weston are based about 19 miles away in Hialeah, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Davie (8 miles), Cooper City (8 miles) and Plantation (9 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation habits in Florida, and what they mean for your animal
In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That doesn't make livestock rules any softer, but it does mean cremation is a normal conversation. Many hobby farmers here choose it for a named goat, alpaca or pet pig partly because it keeps the animal with them if they ever sell the land, and partly because it avoids digging a deep grave by machine.
That Florida rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Weston only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Planning around the seasons in Weston
Weston summers are hot, with August highs averaging around 91°F. That shortens the time you have. The rumen of a goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death, and in heat the body can bloat within hours. Move your animal into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp, and cover it loosely against flies. Ask for same-day collection.
Backyard flocks feel Weston's heat as well. Hens lost in a heat wave should be bagged, kept cool and dealt with promptly, and several deaths at once are worth a call to your vet, since heat and disease can look alike at first. A single bird is simple to take to a pet crematory; ask for a small container if you'd like the ashes, because a hen returns only a spoonful or two.

Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn
For a small backyard flock, costs are modest: a single hen falls in the smallest pet band, and many keepers choose communal cremation. For a goat or sheep, the bigger variable is collection. A crew with a winch coming out to a farm near Weston can cost as much as the cremation itself, so ask what's included before you agree.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, composting and reporting rules in Florida
In most places a pet goat or pig is still a goat or pig in the eyes of the law, so the rules written for farms apply to it. Those rules exist for water safety and disease control, and they tend to favor collection, rendering or cremation over burial. The notes below cover Florida in general; ask your vet or animal health office about your species.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Florida level first; our Florida rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Weston or your HOA adds anything.
The first day, step by step
- Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
- Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. Let a bonded companion see and sniff the body for a few minutes if it seems to help, then move it out of sight.
- Call your vet when the animal died without warning or you don't know why. Certain illnesses of pigs, poultry, sheep and goats carry a reporting duty that comes ahead of everything else.
- Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. That one choice decides which providers can help: private cremation, communal cremation or fallen-stock collection.
- Weigh or estimate the weight honestly, then state it alongside the species as soon as you ring. Plenty of pet crematories set a limit far under what an adult pig or goat weighs.
- Ask for a written total covering cremation, collection, mileage and the urn before anyone sets off.
- Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Weston itself has little room for large animals, but its neighbor Southwest Ranches, along with Davie a little farther east, is Broward's horse country, with ranchettes, barns and riding trails. Many Weston families board horses there. When a horse, pony or goat dies on a ranchette, the collection crew will need the address, the gate code and how close a trailer can get to the stall.

Questions people ask
Does the Weston climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Weston?
Usually yes. Davie is about 8 miles away, Cooper City is about 8 miles away and Plantation is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Weston follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Weston actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Hialeah, about 19 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Weston and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can I bury my pet goat or sheep on my land in Florida?
Often yes, with conditions such as a time limit, a minimum depth and distances from wells, streams and property lines. Livestock rules usually apply to a pet goat or sheep just as they do to a herd, and cities can ban burial inside their limits. If your animal was euthanized, bury it deep or choose cremation.
Is it normal to lose goats or sheep every year?
Sadly, yes. The USDA counted about 500,000 head[5] of adult goats and kids dying in the US in 2015, and sheep producers lost 6.8% of their flocks in 2019[6]. Losses come with keeping stock, which is why many smallholders plan aftercare early. Our livestock mortality planner helps you think it through.
