Temple Terrace, Florida
Where farm species go after a death near Temple Terrace
Heat in the Tampa Bay area rarely lets up from May to October, and a horse or cow lost in a paddock during that stretch has to be moved within hours. Afternoon storms add another problem: pasture that was firm at noon can be soft by four. If you can, have the body moved near a gravel drive or hard-packed lane before the provider's truck arrives.
Temple Terrace families who ride out in Pasco or eastern Hillsborough often ask about the gap in cost between options. Rendering and group cremation cost the least for a horse or cow, while individual cremation returns ashes at a much higher price. Whatever you choose, a lock of tail hair or a worn leather halter can be saved first, as long as you do it before the truck leaves.
Your local vet in Temple Terrace is probably the most useful person you can call. Rural vets deal with sheep, goats and pigs every week, know which crematories will take them and often know the collectors by name. Don't be shy about asking what they'd do with their own animal, or whether a neighbor with a tractor and front loader might help move a heavy body to a trailer.
Temple Terrace's population is around 27,075, the 98th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Tampa, roughly 8 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Temple Terrace run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Tampa (8 miles, a larger centre), Plant City (16 miles) and Zephyrhills (18 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
72.5%[1]
The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary. For small farm species the effect is practical: pet crematories are more numerous and more used to unusual requests, from a hen in a shoebox to two bonded wethers cremated together. For a larger animal, you may still need an equine or large-animal crematory, and those are spread more thinly.
For the Florida figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Temple Terrace rather than as pet data.
Planning around the seasons in Temple Terrace
Temple Terrace's long warm season (May, June, July, August, September and October) is also fly season, and flies find a body within minutes. An old cotton sheet or a few feed sacks draped over the animal keep them off without trapping heat. Check the body every hour or two if pickup is delayed, and keep the other animals from lying beside it in the sun.
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August, September and October), don't plan on waiting until tomorrow. A 150 lb pig or goat holds heat long after death, and flies arrive fast. If collection will be delayed, lay bags of ice or frozen water bottles along the belly and flank under a light cover, never under a sealed plastic sheet, which traps heat. Hosing the body down doesn't help for long; shade does.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds
Weight drives the price, and farm species cover an enormous range: a bantam hen weighs a couple of pounds, a mature kunekune can top 200. Private cremation for pets over 90 lb is listed at about $350 to $450[4], and heavier animals are usually quoted individually. As a yardstick for anything very large, horse cremation works out to roughly $0.80/lb[5].
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Florida: Florida costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Livestock and pet rules in Florida
Rules for dead farm animals change more across borders than almost any other part of pet aftercare. England bans burying pet pigs, sheep and goats; many US states allow it with conditions; California even bans composting whole sheep and goats. The general notes for Florida follow. Treat them as the pet baseline and check livestock rules on top.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Temple Terrace.
The rules that apply across Florida (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Florida page. Temple Terrace may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
The first day, step by step
- Cover the body loosely, then shift it somewhere shaded or into a cool shed, if that can be done safely.
- Let the herd or flock settle. One keeper will give a close companion a little time beside the body; another takes it away at once. Neither is wrong.
- Talk to your vet about why it died, whether anything must be reported and, for a sheep or goat, what testing is available.
- Compare two providers if time allows. With farm species, weight limits and collection charges vary more than the cremation price.
- Confirm whether it's private, partitioned or communal, and get it on paper, since the three terms get muddled.
- Choose what the ashes come home in. A hen needs only a small container; a goat or sheep needs a full-size urn or scatter tube.
Remembering your animal in Temple Terrace
Nobody in Temple Terrace keeps a horse in the backyard, but a half-hour drive east or north reaches real farm country: the strawberry fields and pasture around Plant City, and the rolling horse land of Pasco County. People who board there should keep the barn's street address handy, because providers route by it, and ask the stable manager which collection services they've used before.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Temple Terrace?
The closest communities we cover are Tampa (about 8 miles), Plant City (about 16 miles) and Zephyrhills (about 18 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Temple Terrace too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Tampa to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Tampa (roughly 8 miles from Temple Terrace) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Temple Terrace page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 72.5%[1] of Florida residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How does Temple Terrace's weather affect farm animal aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Temple Terrace, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Are there farm animal cremation options near Temple Terrace, or do I need to travel?
In a town the size of Temple Terrace, the nearest crematory that takes goats, sheep or pigs is often in a larger centre such as Tampa. Many offer farm collection with a mileage charge; others will accept a trailer delivery for less. Your local vet will know which provider other smallholders use.
Why can't I just bury a euthanized goat or pig in a shallow grave?
The euthanasia drugs stay in the body and can kill dogs, foxes, vultures and eagles that dig it up. That's why US drug labels have required a warning since 2003[7] that euthanized animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. For a single animal, cremation is usually the simplest safe answer.
