In Florida, where roughly 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, scattering is a familiar idea, and that suits smallholders. Many local keepers take a goat's or sheep's ashes back out to the paddock rather than keeping them indoors. On your own land scattering generally needs no permit, which makes it an easy tradition to adopt even if you'd never bury stock.

England bans burying pet pigs, sheep and goats; many US states allow it with conditions; California even bans composting whole sheep and goats. The general notes for Florida follow. Step by step, from the field to the ashes
- Check the time. In warm weather, aim to have your animal collected or delivered the same day. Ruminants bloat quickly.
- Lay the body on a tarp you can drag, with the head slightly raised if possible. It makes loading far easier later.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died, and also when something doesn't look right, above all with pigs or a backyard flock.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Ask about chamber size, lifting gear and the collection radius.
