When a hobby-farm animal dies in Lauderdale Lakes

Lauderdale Lakes, Florida

Hobby-farm aftercare in Lauderdale Lakes: the local picture

Families who ride or keep small livestock in Broward's western ranchland often want a keepsake along with, or instead of, ashes: a tail braid, a horseshoe, a photo framed with the show ribbons. Cut hair before collection. Communal cremation for a large animal is the lower-cost choice, while private cremation returns ashes, and a written quote with the trip charge included helps compare providers fairly.

Lauderdale Lakes is built-out suburban land with essentially no room for horses or livestock, but western Broward is a different story. Davie and Southwest Ranches, a short drive west and south, have long equestrian and small-farm traditions, with trails, arenas and backyard barns. If you board a horse or keep goats out there, the aftercare provider will come to the property, so give them the barn address rather than your home one.

Burial is still common around Lauderdale Lakes, and on your own land it's often allowed for many species, with conditions. Those conditions matter: a minimum depth, distances from wells and streams, and in many places a time limit after death. A 150 lb goat needs a much bigger hole than a dog, usually dug by machine. If your animal was euthanized, go deeper than the minimum or choose cremation to protect scavenging wildlife.

Lauderdale Lakes's population is around 36,898, the 82nd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Hialeah, roughly 22 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lauderdale Lakes run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Lauderhill (2 miles, a larger centre), Oakland Park (3 miles) and North Lauderdale (3 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

72.5%[1]

The NFDA projected Florida's cremation rate at 72.5% for 2024.

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Florida thinks about cremation

Since cremation accounts for around 72.5%[1] of human deaths in Florida, relatives and neighbors are unlikely to find it strange that you want your pig's or alpaca's ashes. What may surprise them is the bill: a heavy animal is priced by weight, and collection from a farm adds more. Settle the budget early, and the decision is yours alone.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Lauderdale Lakes tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Lauderdale Lakes

Heat affects the living animals too. In August, pigs and heavily fleeced alpacas and sheep are prone to heat stress, and a sudden death in hot weather is worth mentioning to your vet in case others are at risk. If a planned euthanasia is coming up, book it for early morning, when the barn is coolest and the collection crew has the whole day to reach you.

Lauderdale Lakes summers are hot, with August highs averaging around 91°F. That shortens the time you have. The rumen of a goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death, and in heat the body can bloat within hours. Move your animal into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp, and cover it loosely against flies. Ask for same-day collection.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds

By our estimate, private pet cremation in the US gets cheaper per pound as animals get heavier, falling to about $4 a pound at 100 lb[4]. Large-animal cremation drops further, to about $0.80/lb[5] for a horse. A goat or ewe sits between those two, which is why a quote for a farm pet in Lauderdale Lakes can look high as a total but fair per pound.

Before you bury or compost in Florida

If your animal was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body and can poison scavenging wildlife, and US drug labels have warned since 2003[7] that such animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. That alone rules out a shallow grave. The notes below cover the general rules in Florida; cremation meets all of them.

What to do first, second and third

  1. Stay safe first. A heavy animal is not a one-person lift, and dogs and children should be kept away until you've covered the body.
  2. Note the details your vet will ask for: its age, what signs you noticed lately, anything it was given, and whether others are off color.
  3. Decide on ashes or no ashes. Wanting them back means a private cremation; not wanting them opens up the cheaper, simpler routes of fallen-stock collection or communal cremation.
  4. Book collection or delivery and describe the ground: slope, mud, gates, distance from a hard track.
  5. Save a keepsake: the tag or bell, some feathers, fleece or a hoof trimming.
  6. Record the death in your books if the animal was tagged or on a register under livestock rules, to keep the paperwork tidy.

Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm

Heat and wet ground are the two big issues for large-animal aftercare in western Broward. A horse or pony that dies in summer needs shade, a tarp and collection the same day, and heavy trucks can bog down in soggy pasture after a storm. Ask the provider whether their vehicle can reach the stall or paddock, or whether the animal will need moving to firm ground first.

Questions people ask

Does the Lauderdale Lakes climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lauderdale Lakes?

Usually yes. Lauderhill is about 2 miles away, Oakland Park is about 3 miles away and North Lauderdale is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Lauderdale Lakes page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Will I have to travel to Hialeah to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Hialeah (roughly 22 miles from Lauderdale Lakes) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

What's the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation?

Private means your animal is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. Partitioned means several animals share the chamber but are kept apart, so the ashes are mostly, not certainly, your animal's. Communal means animals are cremated together and nothing is returned. For a named goat or pig, ask for private in writing if the ashes matter.

Do I need to report a dead chicken or duck in Lauderdale Lakes?

Not usually for a single bird with an obvious cause, such as old age or a fox. But unexplained deaths, especially several birds in a short time, should be reported to your vet or state animal health office because of bird flu, which has affected 179 million birds[8] across all 50 states since 2022. Don't move or bury the birds until you've asked.
