Lake Nona, Florida
Hobby-farm aftercare in Lake Nona: the local picture
Lake Nona itself is suburban, with no livestock to speak of, but ranch and pasture land still lies within a short drive to the south and east, toward Osceola County and the St. Johns River marshes. Horses, cattle and goats are kept on properties there. If you have a large animal on acreage in that direction, tell the provider how to reach the barn and whether a truck can drive to the animal.
In Central Florida, summer heat, afternoon storms and sandy ground complicate large-animal removal. Arrange collection quickly, shade the body, and clear a path for the vehicle if the ground is soft. Hurricane season from June to November can disrupt service for days after a storm, so keep a list of removal contacts somewhere you can find it when the power is out.
In a small town like Lake Nona, word travels fast, and you may hear several opinions about what to do with a dead goat or sheep. The only ones that bind you are the law and your own wishes. Check the first with your vet, settle the second with your family, and let the rest go by.
We cover 235 communities in Florida, and Lake Nona is one of them. Some of the providers who serve Lake Nona are based about 13 miles away in Orlando, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Meadow Woods (5 miles, a larger centre), Buenaventura Lakes (6 miles, a larger centre) and Narcoossee (6 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Lake Nona as well.

How Florida thinks about cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in Florida: about 72.5%[1] of those who die there are cremated. That familiarity helps a little with farm animals. Families here rarely need to explain why they'd like the ashes rather than a grave, and pet crematories are well established. The limit is capacity rather than attitude: fewer of them take animals over about 150 lb, so the choice for a big goat or pig can be narrower than the local culture suggests.
The Florida figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
When the weather sets the timetable in Lake Nona
In warm weather, keep the body shaded, loosely covered against flies and off sun-heated ground, and ask for same-day collection. In cold weather you have more time, but lay the animal on a tarp so it can be moved easily and doesn't freeze to bedding. Either way, keep dogs and scavengers well away.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds
Very few US providers publish prices for goats, sheep or pigs, so the table uses the closest published pet price bands by weight. For a pygmy goat, that means something like a large dog; for a 150 lb ewe or pot-bellied pig, the top band or an individual quote; for a llama or donkey, horse territory, where a 1,000 lb animal runs about $600-$1,000[2]. Collection and mileage from a farm around Lake Nona are usually extra.

Burial, composting and reporting rules in Florida
If your animal was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body and can poison scavenging wildlife, and US drug labels have warned since 2003[5] that such animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. That alone rules out a shallow grave. The notes below cover the general rules in Florida; cremation meets all of them.

If your animal dies today: a plan for Lake Nona
- Say goodbye in your own way. Even when the farm is busy, you can find a few unhurried minutes in the paddock or barn.
- Keep the body shaded, covered and away from dogs and scavengers while you make calls.
- Find a provider that takes your species at its weight. Ask your vet who they use nearby, or let us send you local options.
- Choose private, communal or collection, and ask for written confirmation of which one you've booked.
- Decide how the animal gets there. Collection from the farm costs extra; taking it in your own pickup or trailer often cuts the bill a good deal.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no rush to settle it today; plenty of keepers hold off on scattering until an anniversary or a change of season.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Families who keep a horse or a pair of goats near the edge of the metro often treat them as pets as much as livestock. Private cremation is possible for large animals but is more expensive and involves transport to a specialized facility. Rendering or removal is the lower-cost choice. Both are reasonable, and you can keep a lock of hair or a halter either way.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Lake Nona actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Orlando, about 13 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Lake Nona and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Lake Nona?
Usually yes. Meadow Woods is about 5 miles away, Buenaventura Lakes is about 6 miles away and Narcoossee is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[1]. We show it on the Lake Nona page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
Do I need to report a dead chicken or duck in Lake Nona?
Not usually for a single bird with an obvious cause, such as old age or a fox. But unexplained deaths, especially several birds in a short time, should be reported to your vet or state animal health office because of bird flu, which has affected 179 million birds[6] across all 50 states since 2022. Don't move or bury the birds until you've asked.
