What arranging farm animal cremation in Key West is like
There's almost no room for large animals on Key West, and a horse or a cow is an unusual sight anywhere along the island chain. The closest farm and horse country is on the mainland, in the Redland and Homestead area of south Miami-Dade, a long drive up the Overseas Highway. If a horse, donkey or goat you care for lives in the Keys, expect any large-animal provider to come from the mainland, with a travel charge to match.
Because moving a large body from the Keys is costly, some owners here consider options they wouldn't elsewhere: communal cremation on the mainland, or a keepsake-only farewell where a lock of hair, a halter or a hoof print cast in clay is kept and the body goes for rendering. Burial is rarely possible in Key West's coral rock. Ask each provider to spell out every charge in writing.
In a rural area like Key West, the biggest line on a cremation quote is often the journey rather than the cremation itself. Ask whether mileage is charged from the provider's base or from the edge of a free radius, and what happens if the crew needs a winch. Some keepers keep costs down by delivering the animal themselves, or by timing a collection with another owner nearby.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Florida
In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That doesn't make livestock rules any softer, but it does mean cremation is a normal conversation. Many hobby farmers here choose it for a named goat, alpaca or pet pig partly because it keeps the animal with them if they ever sell the land, and partly because it avoids digging a deep grave by machine.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Florida figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Key West tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Key West weather and your animal's first hours
Key West's long warm season (May, June, July, August, September and October) is also fly season, and flies find a body within minutes. An old cotton sheet or a few feed sacks draped over the animal keep them off without trapping heat. Check the body every hour or two if pickup is delayed, and keep the other animals from lying beside it in the sun.
Heat affects the living animals too. In August, pigs and heavily fleeced alpacas and sheep are prone to heat stress, and a sudden death in hot weather is worth mentioning to your vet in case others are at risk. If a planned euthanasia is coming up, book it for early morning, when the barn is coolest and the collection crew has the whole day to reach you.

Weight drives the price, and farm species cover an enormous range: a bantam hen weighs a couple of pounds, a mature kunekune can top 200. Private cremation for pets over 90 lb is listed at about $350 to $450[4], and heavier animals are usually quoted individually. As a yardstick for anything very large, horse cremation works out to roughly $0.80/lb[5].

Burial, composting and reporting rules in Florida
The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. Step by step, from the field to the ashes
- Check the time. In warm weather, aim to have your animal collected or delivered the same day. Ruminants bloat quickly.
- Lay the body on a tarp that's sturdy enough to pull, and prop the head up a little if you can; loading will go much more smoothly afterwards.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died or anything seems unusual, especially in a backyard flock or a pig.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Ask about chamber size, lifting gear and the collection radius.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure it covers mileage, out-of-hours fees and any winch charge.
- Watch the others. Donkeys, alpacas and goats sometimes pace or call out for days. Hold to the usual routine and spend longer with the animal that was closest.
Ways to remember a farm companion
For anyone in Monroe County responsible for a big animal, whether a pony, a sanctuary donkey or a couple of goats on a rare large lot, the key issue is distance. A mainland crew may need three or four hours to reach you, and the heat never takes a season off. Talk with your vet now about what would happen on the day, and write down a provider's number before hurricane season.

What should I do if my goat or pig dies in the Key West heat?
Move the body into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Put bags of ice along the belly if collection will take more than a few hours, and don't seal it in plastic, which traps heat. Ask for the earliest collection slot, or deliver the animal yourself.
Can I bring my goat or pig to the crematory myself?
Usually yes, and it often saves the whole collection fee. Call ahead to agree a time, confirm they accept the weight and ask how they unload. A pickup or small trailer with a ramp works well; lay the animal on a tarp so it can be slid rather than lifted. Bring a helper, and don't try to lift a heavy animal alone.
Are there farm animal cremation options near Key West, or do I need to travel?
In a town the size of Key West, the nearest crematory that takes goats, sheep or pigs is often in a larger centre such as Key West. Many offer farm collection with a mileage charge; others will accept a trailer delivery for less. Your local vet will know which provider other smallholders use.
