Many Cocoa Beach residents work at the port, in tourism or on the Cape, and ride on their days off at stables across the river. Barn staff are often the first to find a horse that has died overnight. Tell staff in advance whether you want the animal cremated individually and whether they should save a shoe, some tail hair or the halter.
The ranchland along the upper St. Johns is flat, marshy in places, and slow to drain after summer storms. A horse or steer lost there between May and October should leave the property the same day, sheltered under a raised canopy until the truck arrives. Hurricanes can close causeways and inland roads alike, so agree on a backup plan with whoever helps care for your animal.
Families in and around Cocoa Beach often combine local and regional help: the goodbye happens in the barn or paddock with the local vet, the animal is moved to a trailer with a neighbor's help, and the cremation itself takes place further away. If you'd like to be present at the cremation, ask early, because the provider may only have certain days available for large animals.

How Florida thinks about cremation
About 72.5%[1] of people in Florida are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary. For small farm species the effect is practical: pet crematories are more numerous and more used to unusual requests, from a hen in a shoebox to two bonded wethers cremated together. For a larger animal, you may still need an equine or large-animal crematory, and those are spread more thinly.

Cocoa Beach weather and your animal's first hours
On a 91°F day in July, a metal trailer or pickup bed turns into an oven. If you're delivering the animal yourself, go at first light, load in shade and drive straight there. Call ahead so the crematory is ready to receive your goat or pig instead of leaving it in a hot vehicle in the yard.
Heat affects the living animals too. Very few US providers publish prices for goats, sheep or pigs, so the table uses the closest published pet price bands by weight. For a pygmy goat, that means something like a large dog; for a 150 lb ewe or pot-bellied pig, the top band or an individual quote; for a llama or donkey, horse territory, where a 1,000 lb animal runs about $600-$1,000[2]. Burial, composting and reporting rules in Florida
Two things catch hobby farmers out: time limits and disease reporting. Many places expect a dead farm animal to be dealt with within a day or two, and some illnesses in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before the body goes anywhere. Here's what applies to pets generally in Florida; your vet can confirm the livestock side.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Cocoa Beach.

Step by step, from the field to the ashes
- Stop and count. Two or more birds or animals dying within a day or two, with no obvious cause such as a predator, is a reason to pause before you move anything.
- Put on gloves and keep the bodies away from the living stock. Double-bag birds; cover larger animals where they lie.
- Ring the vet, or your national animal health agency, and describe exactly what you've seen. Bird flu, swine fevers and several sheep and goat diseases are notifiable in many countries.
- Wait for the all-clear before cremation, burial or composting. Testing may be offered, and a body may need to go to a laboratory first.
- Keep visitors and borrowed equipment off the property until you know more, and scrub boots and feeders between pens.
- Once you're cleared, decide animal by animal. Plenty of keepers opt for a communal cremation for most of a flock and a private one for a single favorite bird.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
Cocoa Beach has no room for horses or livestock, but mainland Brevard, west of the city of Cocoa along State Road 520 toward the St. Johns River, still holds cattle ranches, horse lots and small farms. Owners who keep an animal there should describe the ranch road, the gate and whether the body lies near firm ground, and ask whether the price is counted from the provider's base.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Cocoa Beach?
The closest communities we cover are Merritt Island (about 3 miles), Cape Canaveral (about 5 miles) and Rockledge (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Cocoa Beach too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Cocoa Beach climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 91°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Should I ask for a post-mortem before cremation?
If the death was sudden and you have other animals, it's often worth it. A post-mortem can show whether parasites, poisoning or an infectious disease is putting the remaining animals at risk, and it has to happen before cremation. Ask your vet quickly, because a body that has spent a day in the heat is much harder to examine usefully.
