Beverly Hills, Florida
Hobby-farm aftercare in Beverly Hills: the local picture
Residents of Beverly Hills who own a horse or a few head of livestock on acreage somewhere else in Citrus gain a lot from planning ahead. Find out whether burial is allowed on that property, which providers have made collections there before, and what private and communal cremation cost for the animal's weight. File those details with your other important papers.
Pinelands around the Citrus tract of the Withlacoochee State Forest have sandy, well-drained soil, but low spots near rivers and lakes hold water. Heat for much of the year means a dead horse, cow or pig should be removed quickly. When you call, describe the surface between the gate and the animal, and whether a trailer can turn around once it is inside.
Fallen-stock collection and rendering have long been the farm answer around Beverly Hills, and they're quick and inexpensive. But rendering plants are closing, and in many areas the truck no longer runs for a single small animal. If the collector does come, nothing is returned. For a named goat or pet pig, many families decide that's not the ending they want and look for a private cremation in a larger centre such as Tampa.
About 9,000 people live in Beverly Hills, which makes it the 167th-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Tampa, about 67 miles (108 km) away, which is where some providers serving Beverly Hills are based.
The closest communities we cover are Hernando (5 miles), Crystal River (8 miles) and Dunnellon (9 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Beverly Hills too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How Florida thinks about cremation
In Florida, about 72.5%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That doesn't make livestock rules any softer, but it does mean cremation is a normal conversation. Many hobby farmers here choose it for a named goat, alpaca or pet pig partly because it keeps the animal with them if they ever sell the land, and partly because it avoids digging a deep grave by machine.
We take the Florida rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Beverly Hills, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Beverly Hills
In warm weather, keep the body shaded, loosely covered against flies and off sun-heated ground, and ask for same-day collection. In cold weather you have more time, but lay the animal on a tarp so it can be moved easily and doesn't freeze to bedding. Either way, keep dogs and scavengers well away.

How much to budget in Beverly Hills
By our estimate, private pet cremation in the US gets cheaper per pound as animals get heavier, falling to about $4 a pound at 100 lb[4]. Large-animal cremation drops further, to about $0.80/lb[5] for a horse. A goat or ewe sits between those two, which is why a quote for a farm pet in Beverly Hills can look high as a total but fair per pound.

What Florida allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
Before you dig anything for a pig, alpaca, goat or sheep, it helps to know who writes the rules. Usually it's the agriculture or environment authority rather than the local pet bylaws, because the worry is groundwater and disease moving between farms. The Florida notes below cover pets generally; your vet or a farm advisory service can confirm what livestock rules add on top.

If your animal dies today: a plan for Beverly Hills
- Check the time. When it's warm, try to get the animal picked up or dropped off before the day is out, because ruminants swell fast.
- Lay the body on a tarp you can drag, with the head slightly raised if possible. It makes loading far easier later.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died, and also when something doesn't look right, above all with pigs or a backyard flock.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Find out the chamber size, what lifting equipment they have and how far they'll travel.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure it covers mileage, out-of-hours fees and any winch charge.
- Watch the others. Goats, alpacas and donkeys may call or pace for days. Keep routines steady and give the closest companion extra time.
A lasting place for your animal near Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills itself is residential with small lots, so large animals are rare within the community. Beyond its edges, Citrus County has horse properties, cattle pastures and small farms, especially toward Lecanto and the county's eastern side. Regional collection services cover the area; share the nearest crossroads with them, plus any detail about narrow driveways or low branches that could slow a truck.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Florida?
For people, yes: about 72.5%[1] of Florida deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Beverly Hills follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Beverly Hills?
Usually yes. Hernando is about 5 miles away, Crystal River is about 8 miles away and Dunnellon is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Tampa to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Tampa (roughly 67 miles from Beverly Hills) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I bring my goat or pig to the crematory myself?
Usually yes, and it often saves the whole collection fee. Call ahead to agree a time, confirm they accept the weight and ask how they unload. A pickup or small trailer with a ramp works well; lay the animal on a tarp so it can be slid rather than lifted. Bring a helper, and don't try to lift a heavy animal alone.
Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?
If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
