Bringing your farm pet's ashes home in Florence

Florence, Alabama

What arranging farm animal cremation in Florence is like

Lauderdale County around Florence is rolling farm country, with cattle, horses, goats and hay fields up toward the Tennessee state line, and the Natchez Trace Parkway crossing nearby. The university in Florence even keeps live lions as its mascots. When a large animal dies, share the location, the terrain and whether a trailer with a winch can reach the animal.

Northwest Alabama's summer heat means a horse, cow or goat must be moved or buried quickly, while winter ice and wet spring pastures can make hilly farm lanes tricky for a truck and trailer. If you keep an aging large animal in Lauderdale or Colbert County, ask in advance which providers cover the Shoals, whether individual cremation is available and how far they're prepared to travel.

Burial is still common around Florence, and on your own land it's often allowed for many species, with conditions. Those conditions matter: a minimum depth, distances from wells and streams, and in many places a time limit after death. A 150 lb goat needs a much bigger hole than a dog, usually dug by machine. If your animal was euthanized, go deeper than the minimum or choose cremation to protect scavenging wildlife.

With roughly 42,581 residents, Florence is the 11th-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Huntsville, about 61 miles (99 km) away, which is where some providers serving Florence are based.

For a second opinion on price, Muscle Shoals (6 miles), Athens (41 miles) and Decatur (42 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Florence routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

42.3%[1]

The NFDA projected Alabama's cremation rate at 42.3% for 2024.

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Cremation habits in Alabama, and what they mean for your animal

Cremation is the minority choice in Alabama, at about 42.3%[1] of people, and some neighbors may think it an odd expense for a goat or sheep. You don't owe anyone an explanation. An animal you named and handled every day isn't worth its sale price to you, and a private cremation is a reasonable way to mark that.

The Alabama figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Heat, cold and timing in Florence

In warm weather, keep the body shaded, loosely covered against flies and off sun-heated ground, and ask for same-day collection. In cold weather you have more time, but lay the animal on a tarp so it can be moved easily and doesn't freeze to bedding. Either way, keep dogs and scavengers well away.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds

Some costs around a farm death in Florence arrive before the crematory's: a farm call for euthanasia, a post-mortem if you want answers, occasionally a disease test. Ask your vet to itemize them. Then use our cremation cost calculator to add cremation, collection and the urn, so the whole bill is in one place before you commit.

What Alabama allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry

If you rent your land or keep animals on someone else's property, the landowner's say matters as much as the law. Many tenancies and grazing agreements forbid burial, and a landlord may not want a compost pile either. Cremation needs nobody's permission. Here's the general picture for pets in Alabama; your lease may add conditions of its own.

A practical checklist for smallholders in Florence

  1. Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
  2. Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. Let a bonded companion see and sniff the body for a few minutes if it seems to help, then move it out of sight.
  3. Call your vet when the animal died without warning or you don't know why. Certain illnesses of pigs, poultry, sheep and goats carry a reporting duty that comes ahead of everything else.
  4. Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. Everything else follows from that answer, because it narrows the field to fallen-stock collection, communal cremation or a private cremation.
  5. Weigh or estimate the weight honestly, then state it alongside the species as soon as you ring. Plenty of pet crematories set a limit far under what an adult pig or goat weighs.
  6. Ask for a written total that bundles the cremation, pickup, mileage and urn, and have it before any vehicle leaves.
  7. Take keepsakes before collection: an ear tag, the collar or halter, a handful of feathers or a snip of fleece.

Ways to remember a farm companion

Many large animals around Florence are family horses, trail-riding mounts and small herds on weekend farms, alongside working cattle operations. A beloved horse or goat can be cremated on its own with the ashes returned, or buried on your land; working stock more often goes to rendering. Ask about any state or county rules on burial near springs, wells and creeks before digging.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Huntsville to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Huntsville (roughly 61 miles from Florence) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is cremation common in Alabama?

For people, yes: about 42.3%[1] of Alabama deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Florence follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?

Usually yes. Muscle Shoals is about 6 miles away, Athens is about 41 miles away and Decatur is about 42 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Will a pet crematory near Florence take a goat or sheep?

Many will, but not all. Pet crematories are built around dogs and cats, and some cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb or don't take farm species at all. Give the species and an honest weight estimate on the first call. If the answer is no, ask who they'd recommend; they usually know which local providers take larger animals.

Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?

If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.

How big an urn do I need for a goat or sheep?

Plan on roughly a cubic inch of capacity for every pound your animal weighed[5]. A 70 lb pygmy goat then needs around 70 cubic inches and a 140 lb ewe around 140, more than most standard pet urns hold. Scattering most of it? A scatter tube plus a small keepsake urn works well. Our urn size calculator will work out the numbers.
