Farm Animal Cremation in South Korea: what to know
For keepers in South Korea, what happens after a farm animal's death is shaped by three layers of rules: national animal-health law, regional or local rules on burial and water, and sometimes the terms of a lease. This overview explains the national layer and where cremation fits within it; each city page adds the local detail.
Across South Korea, the 7 community pages we publish share one message: ask about species and weight first. Everything else, from price to timing to whether the ashes come back, follows from whether a provider can take your animal at all. Below is the national overview of rules, costs and seasons, with local pages for more detail.
We cover 7 communities in South Korea, from Seoul, Busan and Incheon to smaller towns.

Cremation habits in South Korea, and what they mean for your animal
Roughly 92.43%[1] of funerals in South Korea are cremations, and that shows in how many pet providers advertise here. More choice brings a new job: telling them apart. Ask each one whether it has cremated a goat, sheep or pig before, what its heaviest accepted weight is and how it keeps farm animals identified. Specific answers beat a glossy website.
We take the South Korea percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.
Where the money goes: cremation, collection, urn
In South Korea, a farm species may need special transport, because standard pet-taxi vehicles aren't built for a 50 kg animal. Ask whether transport is included, whether a vet's certificate is needed before cremation and how much notice the provider needs. Get the full figure in writing, in local currency, before the animal is moved.
Pet funerals around South Korea are often sold as packages with a farewell room, flowers and an urn, and the package tier moves the price more than the cremation itself. For a goat, pig or large bird, ask for the simplest individual option first, then add only what you want. Heavier animals may be priced per kilogram above the top band.
| Place and weight | Published example | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Hong Kong, pet over 50 kg | HKD 6,000 individual[2] | Basic package |
| Japan, 25 to 30 kg pet | about JPY 80,000[3] | Funeral package with ceremony |
| Tokyo, 20 to 30 kg pet | JPY 38,500 individual[4] | JPY 30,800 communal |
| Singapore, 10 to 20 kg pet | SGD 480 private[5] | Heavier animals quoted individually |

Burial, composting and reporting rules in South Korea
The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for South Korea below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.
What to do first, second and third
- Check the time. In warm weather, aim to have your animal collected or delivered the same day. Ruminants bloat quickly.
- Lay the body on a tarp that's sturdy enough to pull, and prop the head up a little if you can; loading will go much more smoothly afterwards.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died, and also when something doesn't look right, above all with pigs or a backyard flock.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Find out the chamber size, what lifting equipment they have and how far they'll travel.
- Get the price in writing, including any winch, after-hours or mileage charges.
- Watch the others. Donkeys, alpacas and goats sometimes pace or call out for days. Hold to the usual routine and spend longer with the animal that was closest.
A lasting place for your animal near South Korea
Children often take the loss of a named farm animal hard, especially if they helped raise it from a kid or lamb. Letting them choose the scattering spot, paint a stone marker or write the animal's name on the barn wall gives them something to do with the feeling. The rest of the herd may call for a few days too; that's normal.

Questions people ask
Does winter affect farm animal aftercare in South Korea?
In colder places, yes. Frozen ground can make burial impossible for months, composting slows down, and snow can block farm tracks. In South Korea, one of the coldest places we cover in South Korea, average winter lows reach about °F. Many keepers cremate in winter and scatter or bury the ashes in spring.
Where in South Korea is farm animal cremation hardest to arrange?
Usually in the most rural areas, where crematories that accept large animals are furthest away and collection charges climb with every mile. Keepers there often deliver the animal themselves by trailer, or split a pickup with a neighbor. Ask any provider where their collection radius ends before you need them.
How quickly does a dead farm animal need to be dealt with in South Korea?
Many rules set a time limit, often a day or two after death, and warm weather shortens the practical window further because goats, sheep and alpacas bloat quickly. Keep the body shaded and loosely covered and arrange collection or delivery the same day if you can.
Is fallen-stock collection an option for a single pet goat or sheep in South Korea?
Often, yes, where a knacker, renderer or deadstock collector still serves your area. It's lawful, quick and usually inexpensive, but nothing is returned. Rendering capacity has shrunk in many places, so the truck may not run for one small animal. Ask your vet who collects locally.
Do the rules in South Korea treat a pet pig differently from a farm pig?
Usually not. Animal-health and disposal rules tend to follow the species rather than the reason you keep it, so a pot-bellied pig that lives in the house is generally covered by the same rules as a commercial one. That can limit burial and composting. Cremation is allowed for both.
What should I do if a farm animal dies in the heat?
Move the body into deep shade or a cool barn, lay it on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely. Put ice along the belly if collection is delayed. In hot parts of South Korea, such as South Korea where summer highs average about °F, same-day collection or delivery is the safest plan.
