Bremen, Germany
Who can help with a goat, pig or sheep in Bremen
The land around Bremen is flat, low and often waterlogged, especially in winter, and meadows can be too soft for heavy vehicles. Say whether the animal lies in a stall, on a hard yard or out on the marsh pasture, and how far a truck with a crane arm would need to travel off the paved road. Marshland drainage ditches along field edges can also block a vehicle's approach.
Bremen is surrounded by Lower Saxony's farming and horse country, with the town of Verden, known for its horse auctions, just to the southeast and dairy cattle grazing the Blockland and Wümme meadows. When a farm animal dies, German rules normally route it to official carcass collection. Individual cremation with ashes returned is a private option for large animals kept as companions.
In a metro the size of Bremen, the provider that answers the phone fastest isn't always the one that can help. A pet crematory in the city may take a 60 lb pygmy goat without a second thought, then turn down a 200 lb kunekune because the chamber door is too narrow. Large-animal crematories tend to sit on the rural fringe, near horse country, because they need space and permits. Budget for a drive, or for a collection fee that reflects one.
About 569,000 people live in Bremen.
For a second opinion on price, Hamburg (59 miles, a larger centre), Hanover (62 miles) and Munster (92 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Bremen routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
76.0%[1]
In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation rates in Germany and your animal
With 76.0%[1] of people in Germany now cremated, local crematories hear "we'd like the ashes back" every day. For a farm animal the harder part is logistics: a chamber that fits, a crew with lifting gear and someone willing to drive out to a paddock. Lead with those questions and the cultural side takes care of itself.
The Germany figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Bremen
Whatever the season, keep a few things ready in the barn if you have older stock: a big tarp, a couple of feed sacks or an old sheet, work gloves and the number of a crematory that accepts your kind of animal. It turns the first hour after a death from a scramble into a routine you can follow even when upset.

How much to budget in Bremen
In several European countries the default route for a dead sheep, goat or pig is collection by the national rendering service. Near Bremen that's usually the cheapest option, and nothing comes back. A pet crematorium is the alternative if you want the ashes; the prices in the table give a sense of the step up.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Germany: Germany costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What Germany allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
In most places a pet goat or pig is still a goat or pig in the eyes of the law, so the rules written for farms apply to it. Those rules exist for water safety and disease control, and they tend to favor collection, rendering or cremation over burial. The notes below cover Germany in general; ask your vet or animal health office about your species.
In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.
What to do when a farm animal dies in Bremen
- If the death was expected, you and your vet may already have a plan. Call and confirm the collection time, and book any home euthanasia for the cool of the morning.
- If it was sudden, call your vet or farm vet first. They'll tell you whether testing is worthwhile and whether the rest of the herd is at risk.
- Clear a path for collection. Open gates, move vehicles and think about how a van or trailer will reach the animal.
- Line up help. A 150 lb animal takes at least two people to move safely, plus a tarp, sled or slide board.
- Ask the provider three questions: whether the cremation is genuinely private, how they track which animal is which between the gate and the ashes, and when you'll get the ashes back.
- Check the rules before any burial or composting if you're considering them instead: species, depth, distance from water and time limits.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
Many large animals around Bremen are family companions: a riding school pony, a pair of pet sheep, a rescued donkey. The city's most famous animals are the Town Musicians, the donkey, dog, cat and rooster of the Grimm fairy tale, and their statue beside the town hall is a reminder of how much animals mean here. Owners who want something gentler than the official collection route can ask their vet now, while nothing is urgent, what an individual cremation would cost.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Germany?
For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Bremen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Bremen?
Usually yes. Hamburg is about 59 miles away, Hanover is about 62 miles away and Munster is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Can I get my animal's ashes back through fallen-stock collection?
No. Knackers, fallen-stock collectors and renderers process animals in bulk and nothing is returned. It's a respectful, lawful and inexpensive route, and some owners are comfortable with it. If you want your own animal's ashes, you need a private cremation, confirmed in writing, from a crematory that takes farm species.
Will a pet crematory near Bremen take a goat or sheep?
Many will, but not all. Pet crematories are built around dogs and cats, and some cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb or don't take farm species at all. Give the species and an honest weight estimate on the first call. If the answer is no, ask who they'd recommend; they usually know which local providers take larger animals.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?
If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
