Farm animal cremation in Stuttgart

Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg

Finding a crematory that takes farm species near Stuttgart

Baden-Württemberg has a strong farming and horse tradition, from the state stud at Marbach on the Swabian Alb to dairy and beef farms on the Filder plateau south of Stuttgart. When a cow, sheep, pig or horse dies, German rules normally send fallen stock to a rendering plant, arranged through the regional collection service. Individual cremation with ashes returned is a separate, privately arranged option for animals kept as companions.

Around Stuttgart, small farms keep sheep, goats and a few pigs between orchards and vineyards, often on sloping land. Access is the practical problem with a large animal: narrow farm tracks and steep meadows can make collection hard. When you ask for help, describe the ground, the animal's weight and how close a vehicle can get. Wet spring meadows can be the hardest to cross.

Backyard poultry is where Stuttgart keepers most often need help. A single hen that dies of old age is simple: most pet crematories will take her, and many keepers choose communal cremation and keep a few feathers. Several birds dying suddenly is different. Call your vet or the animal health authority before arranging anything, because bird flu has reached backyard flocks in many countries and some deaths must be reported.

With roughly 635,000 residents, Stuttgart is the largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Karlsruhe (39 miles), Heidelberg (49 miles) and Mannheim (59 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Stuttgart routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

76.0%[1]

In 2023, 76.0% of deaths in Germany were cremated (164 crematoria).

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits

Since cremation accounts for around 76.0%[1] of human deaths in Germany, relatives and neighbors are unlikely to find it strange that you want your pig's or alpaca's ashes. What may surprise them is the bill: a heavy animal is priced by weight, and collection from a farm adds more. Settle the budget early, and the decision is yours alone.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the Germany figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Stuttgart tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Heat, cold and timing in Stuttgart

Whatever the season, keep a few things ready in the barn if you have older stock: a big tarp, a couple of feed sacks or an old sheet, work gloves and the number of a crematory that accepts your kind of animal. It turns the first hour after a death from a scramble into a routine you can follow even when upset.

Budgeting in Stuttgart for a pig, ewe or goat

Prices in Germany will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.

The full price table by size is on our Baden-Wurttemberg page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Livestock and pet rules in Baden-Wurttemberg

The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for Baden-Wurttemberg below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.

In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.

What to do when a farm animal dies in Stuttgart

  1. Ask the clinic what happens if you give no instructions. Many send farm species to a renderer or a communal cremation by default.
  2. Say plainly if the ashes should come home, then have the staff note "private cremation" on the record while you're still there.
  3. Raise the question of a post-mortem now. Arranging one is much simpler while the body remains at the clinic; once it has left for the crematory, it's a different matter.
  4. Find out who bills you. Some practices add the cremation to their own invoice; others hand you the crematory's number to pay directly.
  5. Ask for the halter, collar or tag to be kept for you, plus a fleece clipping or a few feathers if you didn't take one yourself.
  6. Plan the evening at home. Herd mates may call for the missing animal when you come back without it; extra hay and a familiar routine help.

Ways to remember a farm companion

For many keepers in the region, a pony, a pet pig or a small flock of sheep is family, and the standard rendering route can feel wrong. If you would prefer individual cremation, find out beforehand whether your yard allows a vehicle with lifting gear, and whether there is a quiet place for a short farewell. Sanctuaries and animal parks around Stuttgart face the same questions and usually plan them with their vets.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Stuttgart follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Stuttgart?

Usually yes. Karlsruhe is about 39 miles away, Heidelberg is about 49 miles away and Mannheim is about 59 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Can I keep backyard chickens and goats in Stuttgart, and does that change aftercare?

Many local rules allow a few hens, and some allow miniature goats or a pet pig, usually with limits on numbers. The same rules often restrict burying livestock in built-up areas, and leases or homeowner and residents' associations can be stricter. In practice, most city keepers choose cremation, which avoids the question. Check before planning a burial.

How big an urn do I need for a goat or sheep?

Plan on roughly a cubic inch of capacity for every pound your animal weighed[5]. A 70 lb pygmy goat then needs around 70 cubic inches and a 140 lb ewe around 140, more than most standard pet urns hold. Scattering most of it? A scatter tube plus a small keepsake urn works well. Our urn size calculator will work out the numbers.

How much ash will I get back from a goat, sheep or hen?

Cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[3]. A 70 lb pygmy goat returns roughly two to three and a half pounds of ash; a 160 lb alpaca returns five to eight. A hen returns only a spoonful or two, so ask for a small container rather than a standard urn. The urn size calculator on our tools page can help.

How long until I get my farm animal's ashes back?

Many families get the ashes within one to two weeks. A large animal can take longer, because the cremation itself runs for hours and the provider may batch large-animal days. If the crematory is in a larger centre away from Stuttgart, add time for the return trip, or arrange to collect the ashes yourself.
