Goat, pig and alpaca aftercare in Freiburg, Baden-Wurttemberg

Freiburg, Baden-Wurttemberg

Goats, pigs and backyard flocks in Freiburg

Steep Black Forest pastures and narrow farm lanes are hard enough in summer, and in winter snow can close higher tracks for days. Down in the Rhine valley, summer heat makes speed more important. For commercial livestock there are established collection channels; for a family horse, pony, donkey or pet goat, ask whether individual cremation with ashes returned is available and what the full cost will be.

The Black Forest begins right at Freiburg's edge, with hill farms keeping dairy cattle, goats and sheep, and horses including the chestnut Black Forest draught horse. To the west, the Kaiserstuhl and the Rhine plain add vineyards and smallholdings. When a large animal dies on a hill farm or at a stable, access is the first question: describe the track, the slope and whether a heavy vehicle can reach the animal.

Some vets in Freiburg may be willing to hold a small animal such as a hen or a young kid in a cold room for a day while you decide. For anything larger that's rarely possible. Know before you call whether you're asking for storage, collection or simply advice, and the conversation will go quicker.

Freiburg's population is around 230,000, the 4th-largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Karlsruhe, about 74 miles (119 km) away, which is where some providers serving Freiburg are based.

Our pages for Karlsruhe (74 miles), Stuttgart (82 miles, a larger centre) and Heidelberg (104 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Freiburg as well.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Germany

In Germany, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That doesn't make livestock rules any softer, but it does mean cremation is a normal conversation. Many hobby farmers here choose it for a named goat, alpaca or pet pig partly because it keeps the animal with them if they ever sell the land, and partly because it avoids digging a deep grave by machine.

That Germany rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Freiburg only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Planning around the seasons in Freiburg

In warm weather, keep the body shaded, loosely covered against flies and off sun-heated ground, and ask for same-day collection. In cold weather you have more time, but lay the animal on a tarp so it can be moved easily and doesn't freeze to bedding. Either way, keep dogs and scavengers well away.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds

European pet crematoria price by weight, and published examples give a feel for what a goat or sheep might cost. In France, individual cremation for a 50 kg animal is listed at €300 to €400, against €130 to €180 for collective[4]. Many European countries route farmed species to an approved rendering service by default, so confirm that a crematorium in or near Freiburg will take your species before you book.

Livestock law and pet rules in Baden-Wurttemberg

Before you dig anything for a pig, alpaca, goat or sheep, it helps to know who writes the rules. Usually it's the agriculture or environment authority rather than the local pet bylaws, because the worry is groundwater and disease moving between farms. The Baden-Wurttemberg notes below cover pets generally; your vet or a farm advisory service can confirm what livestock rules add on top.

In Germany, dead farm animals such as sheep, goats and pigs normally go to a Tierkörperbeseitigungsanstalt (animal carcass disposal plant), and keepers registered with their state's Tierseuchenkasse often have part of the cost covered. Home burial rules for pets don't usually extend to farm species. Some Tierkrematorien accept goats and pigs for individual cremation (Einzeleinäscherung); ask about weight limits.

The first day, step by step

  1. If the death was expected, there's probably a plan already agreed with your vet. Ring to fix the pickup time, and if euthanasia is at home, arrange it for early morning while it's cool.
  2. If it was sudden, your first call is to the vet or farm vet. They can say whether tests are worth doing and whether the other animals might be in danger.
  3. Clear a path for collection. Open gates, move vehicles and think about how a van or trailer will reach the animal.
  4. Line up help. A 150 lb animal takes at least two people to move safely, plus a tarp, sled or slide board.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: whether the cremation is genuinely private, how they track which animal is which between the gate and the ashes, and when you'll get the ashes back.
  6. Check the rules before any burial or composting if you're considering them instead: species, depth, distance from water and time limits.

Ways to remember a farm companion

Many families around Freiburg keep a horse or pony at a stable in the surrounding villages, or care for goats and sheep on land that has been in the family for generations. If an animal is growing old, planning ahead helps. Talk to your stable about what happens if your horse dies there, find out which providers serve the area and whether ashes can be returned, so nothing is rushed.

the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, read our guides and latest articles, or see what other families chose in the poll results, The services page is the place to compare what is included. If you live between Freiburg and Karlsruhe, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Stuttgart, either page applies. Every other community in Baden-Wurttemberg, and all of Germany, is listed too.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Germany?

For people, yes: about 76.0%[1] of Germany deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Freiburg follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Freiburg?

The closest communities we cover are Karlsruhe (about 74 miles), Stuttgart (about 82 miles) and Heidelberg (about 104 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Freiburg too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Will I have to travel to Karlsruhe to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Karlsruhe (roughly 74 miles from Freiburg) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How big an urn do I need for a goat or sheep?

Plan on roughly a cubic inch of capacity for every pound your animal weighed[6]. A 70 lb pygmy goat then needs around 70 cubic inches and a 140 lb ewe around 140, more than most standard pet urns hold. Scattering most of it? A scatter tube plus a small keepsake urn works well. Our urn size calculator will work out the numbers.

Should the rest of the herd see the body?

Many keepers find it helps. Goats, alpacas and donkeys in particular often settle better if a bonded companion is allowed a few minutes to see and sniff the body. Stay with them, then move the body out of sight before collection. Expect calling or pacing for a few days afterwards; steady routines help.

How long until I get my farm animal's ashes back?

Many families get the ashes within one to two weeks. A large animal can take longer, because the cremation itself runs for hours and the provider may batch large-animal days. If the crematory is in a larger centre away from Freiburg, add time for the return trip, or arrange to collect the ashes yourself.
