What arranging farm animal cremation in Aarhus is like

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Denmark
With cremation chosen for about 86.48%[1] of people in Denmark, local families tend to expect it for their animals too. On a smallholding, that expectation meets livestock law: the options for a goat, sheep or pig are set by rules written for farms, not for pets. Cremation fits comfortably inside those rules almost everywhere, which is one more reason it's the common choice here.

When the weather sets the timetable in Aarhus

Rules worth knowing in Central Jutland
A rough rule holds almost everywhere: the bigger the animal, the more the law cares where it ends up. A hen or duck is treated much like any small pet. A 150 lb ewe or a pig brings setbacks from wells, depth requirements and sometimes an outright ban. Here's what Central Jutland says about pets in general; expect a large farm species to be held to a higher standard.
Step by step, from the field to the ashes
- Check the time. When it's warm, try to get the animal picked up or dropped off before the day is out, because ruminants swell fast.
- Lay the body on a tarp you can drag, with the head slightly raised if possible. It makes loading far easier later.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died, and also when something doesn't look right, above all with pigs or a backyard flock.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Find out the chamber size, what lifting equipment they have and how far they'll travel.
- Get the price in writing, including any winch, after-hours or mileage charges.
- Watch the others. Goats, alpacas and donkeys may call or pace for days. Keep routines steady and give the closest companion extra time.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Jutland's flat, open farmland is windy and wet in winter, and fields and tracks can become soft and muddy. Mention whether the field is waterlogged and where the animal lies, so a suitable vehicle comes. For an older horse or a pet farm animal, it's easier to ask about options calmly in advance. Larger animals need a winch or tail-lift, so ask what the crew brings and whether you'll need to help lift.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?
If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
