What arranging farm animal cremation in Sao Paulo is like
Summer rains in the São Paulo region can turn rural tracks to mud and make highways slow, and warm weather means a large body must be moved quickly. If you keep older horses, goats, pigs or sanctuary animals on a small property near the city, it helps to know in advance which providers handle large animals and how they collect. That way a hard day isn't also a day of phone calls.
Many large-animal owners around São Paulo keep a few horses or goats on a weekend property rather than running a working farm. For a family animal, individual cremation with ashes returned is often possible; commercial livestock usually goes through agricultural disposal channels. Be clear about which applies, and check whether any local rules on burying large animals apply to your land before choosing that option.
Prices in Sao Paulo vary more between providers than they do in small towns, and farm species widen the gap. One crematory may quote a private cremation for your goat at a large-dog price; another may send you to an equine facility that charges by the pound. Ask for a written total that shows the cremation, collection, mileage and urn as separate lines, so you're comparing like with like.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation habits in Brazil, and what they mean for your animal
Where cremation covers only about 9%[1] of human deaths, as in Brazil, the nearest pet crematory may be further off than you'd like, and fewer still take farm species. Call one before you need it. Five minutes on the phone while your animal is well tells you the weight limit, the collection radius and the price, which is far easier than finding out on a hard day.
The Brazil percentage above is from Exame, citing Sincep (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Sao Paulo, not as a count of pets.
Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Sao Paulo
Wherever you are, the rule for a farm animal is the same: shade, cover and speed. A goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death and can bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat. Lay the animal on its side on straw or a tarp, cover it loosely and ask for collection within the day.

What farm animal cremation costs in Sao Paulo
Currencies, taxes and fuel costs make published prices hard to compare across borders, so read the table for proportions rather than a local price. Three things hold almost everywhere: heavier animals cost more, individual costs more than shared, and collection from a farm near Sao Paulo is charged separately.

What Brazil allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Brazil; livestock rules can be stricter.
The first day, step by step
- If the death was expected, you and your vet may already have a plan. Call and confirm the collection time, and book any home euthanasia for the cool of the morning.
- If it was sudden, call your vet or farm vet first. They'll tell you whether testing is worthwhile and whether the rest of the herd is at risk.
- Clear a path for collection. Get gates open and vehicles moved, then work out how a trailer or van will get to the animal.
- Line up help. Moving a 150 lb animal safely needs two people at minimum, along with a slide board, sled or tarp.
- Ask the provider three questions: whether the cremation is genuinely private, how they track which animal is which between the gate and the ashes, and when you'll get the ashes back.
- Check the rules before any burial or composting if that's what you'd rather do: which species, how deep, how far from water, and how soon.
A lasting place for your animal near Sao Paulo
The city of São Paulo itself has few large animals, but the metro region has riding clubs and a well-known racecourse, and the state's interior is major farm country with cattle, horses, sugar cane and dairy. If a horse or farm animal dies on a property outside the city, the drive and the access are the main issues. Share the location, the road surface and whether a vehicle with a winch can reach the animal.

Questions people ask
Why does the Sao Paulo page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Exame, citing Sincep (2024) reports about 9%[1] of Brazil residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How long until I get my farm animal's ashes back?
Many families get the ashes within one to two weeks. A large animal can take longer, because the cremation itself runs for hours and the provider may batch large-animal days. If the crematory is in a larger centre away from Sao Paulo, add time for the return trip, or arrange to collect the ashes yourself.
Who do I call first if a farm animal dies at night in Sao Paulo?
If the death was expected and the animal is safe from scavengers, you can usually wait until morning: shade, cover and call your vet or the crematory first thing. If it was sudden, or several animals are ill, call an emergency or farm vet that night. Collection itself can wait for daylight in most weather.
How big an urn do I need for a goat or sheep?
Plan on roughly a cubic inch of capacity for every pound your animal weighed[5]. A 70 lb pygmy goat then needs around 70 cubic inches and a 140 lb ewe around 140, more than most standard pet urns hold. Scattering most of it? A scatter tube plus a small keepsake urn works well. Our urn size calculator will work out the numbers.
Do I have to report the death of a backyard hen or pet pig?
A single death with an obvious cause usually doesn't need reporting. Unexplained deaths in poultry, pigs, sheep or goats are different: several diseases in these species are notifiable, and the authorities would rather hear about a false alarm than miss an outbreak. Call your vet first; they'll know whether to involve the animal health authority.
Can someone collect a dead goat or pig from a farm near Sao Paulo?
Yes, most crematories that take farm species offer farm collection, usually with a charge for mileage beyond a base radius. Tell them the weight, how close a vehicle can get and whether there's mud, a slope or gates. Larger animals need a winch or tail-lift, so ask what the crew brings and whether you'll need to help lift.
