Farm Animal Cremation in Brazil: what to know
Pet pigs, backyard flocks, pygmy goats and alpacas are loved as family animals throughout Brazil, even though the law often files them under livestock. This guide explains what that means in practice when one dies: how quickly to act, who can collect a heavy animal, what cremation costs by weight and how to bring the ashes home.
For keepers in Brazil, what happens after a farm animal's death is shaped by three layers of rules: national animal-health law, regional or local rules on burial and water, and sometimes the terms of a lease. This overview explains the national layer and where cremation fits within it; each city page adds the local detail.
We cover 3 communities in Brazil, from Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia.

Cremation rates in Brazil and your animal
About 9%[1] of people in Brazil are cremated, one of the lower rates. In rural areas, stock has always been buried on the farm or collected, and that's still a perfectly lawful choice in many places. If you'd rather have your animal's ashes, you're not being unusual, just ahead of the local habit. Ask your vet which crematory other smallholders use.
The cremation figure for Brazil comes from Exame, citing Sincep (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Budgeting in Brazil for a pig, ewe or goat
Farm animal cremation is available in some places around Brazil, though providers that take goats, sheep or pigs are fewer than those for dogs and cats. Prices rise with weight. Ask for a written quote in local currency that lists collection, the cremation itself and the container for the ashes, and confirm the animal will be cremated on its own.
Where no local crematory takes farm species, some keepers near Brazil use a vet clinic's incinerator or a municipal facility, which usually costs little but returns nothing. If you want the ashes, ask whether the vet can arrange an individual cremation through a partner provider, and what the transport adds to the bill.
| Place | Shared | Separate (ashes back) |
|---|---|---|
| UAE | AED 700 to 900 for a pet under 5 kg[2] | AED 2,300 to 2,700 up to 30 kg[2] |
| United States, over 90 lb | $150 to $200[3] | $350 to $450[3] |
| United States, 1,000 lb horse | Not usually offered | $600-$1,000[4] |

Burial, composting and reporting rules in Brazil
If your animal was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body and can poison scavenging wildlife, and US drug labels have warned since 2003[6] that such animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. That alone rules out a shallow grave. The notes below cover the general rules in Brazil; cremation meets all of them.
A practical checklist for smallholders in Brazil
- Stop and count. When two or more animals or birds have died inside a day or so and nothing obvious like a predator explains it, don't move anything yet.
- Put on gloves and keep the bodies away from the living stock. Double-bag birds; cover larger animals where they lie.
- Ring the vet, or your national animal health agency, then give a precise account of what you found. In many countries, bird flu, swine fevers and a number of sheep and goat diseases have to be reported.
- Wait for the all-clear before you cremate, bury or compost anything. You may be offered testing, and one of the bodies might have to go off to a lab first.
- Keep visitors and borrowed equipment off the property while you wait for answers, and clean boots and feeders whenever you move between pens.
- Once you're cleared, decide animal by animal. Plenty of keepers opt for a communal cremation for most of a flock and a private one for a single favorite bird.
Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm
Keeping ashes at home is the most common choice, and there's no time limit. When you're ready, you might scatter them on the anniversary, share a little with a family member who helped with the animal, or bury them in the paddock once the ground allows. There's no wrong order to do these things in.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Why won't the pet crematory take my animal?
Usually because of weight or species. Many pet crematories are built for dogs and cats and cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb, or don't take pigs or ruminants at all. Equine and large-animal crematories take heavier animals. Ask the first provider who they'd recommend; they usually know.
Do I need to report the death of a backyard chicken or pig in Brazil?
Not usually for a single death with an obvious cause. Unexplained deaths, especially several birds or pigs in a short time, should be reported to your vet or animal health authority, because some diseases in poultry, pigs, sheep and goats are notifiable. Don't move or bury the animals until you've asked.
Is farm animal cremation common in Brazil?
For people, about 9%[1] of deaths in Brazil end in cremation. For farm animals, burial and fallen-stock collection are still the traditional routes, but more families choose private cremation for the goats, pigs, sheep and alpacas they've named, especially in towns and on hobby farms near the cities.
Is fallen-stock collection an option for a single pet goat or sheep in Brazil?
Often, yes, where a knacker, renderer or deadstock collector still serves your area. It's lawful, quick and usually inexpensive, but nothing is returned. Rendering capacity has shrunk in many places, so the truck may not run for one small animal. Ask your vet who collects locally.
Do the rules in Brazil treat a pet pig differently from a farm pig?
Usually not. Animal-health and disposal rules tend to follow the species rather than the reason you keep it, so a pot-bellied pig that lives in the house is generally covered by the same rules as a commercial one. That can limit burial and composting. Cremation is allowed for both.
Can I bury a pet goat, sheep or pig on my land in Brazil?
It depends on the species and the local rules. Many places allow burial of livestock on your own land with conditions on depth, distance from wells and water, and timing; some ban it for farmed species altogether, and cities often restrict it within their limits. If your animal was euthanized, deep burial or cremation protects wildlife.
