Mosman, New South Wales
Finding a crematory that takes farm species near Mosman
For horses or goats kept on acreage around Sydney's fringe, summer storms and heat both affect logistics. Heavy rain can make paddocks soft and tracks slippery, and a large body cannot wait long in a heatwave. Ask in advance whether individual cremation with the ashes returned is available at that size, and how transport would work. A bushfire warning on the fringe can also change plans at short notice, so keep a note of the options somewhere easy to find.
Large animals are rare in Mosman itself, which is fully suburban, although the peninsula is also home to a major zoo on the harbour, whose animals are cared for under its own arrangements. Families who ride or keep hobby animals usually do so further out, in semi-rural areas such as Terrey Hills, the Hills District or the Hawkesbury, so a provider near the animal's location is often the practical choice.
In a rural area like Mosman, the biggest line on a cremation quote is often the journey rather than the cremation itself. Ask whether mileage is charged from the provider's base or from the edge of a free radius, and what happens if the crew needs a winch. Some keepers keep costs down by delivering the animal themselves, or by timing a collection with another owner nearby.
With roughly 28,000 residents, Mosman is the 9th-largest of the 9 New South Wales communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Mosman are based about 3 miles away in Sydney, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Mosman sits within easy reach of Sydney (3 miles, a larger centre), Wollongong (46 miles, a larger centre) and Newcastle (70 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Mosman; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
71%[1]
Australian cremation rates hovered around 70-72% between 2020 and 2023, with Sydney and Melbourne often above 80%.
$600-$1,000[2]
Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.
3-5% of body weight[3]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
The published sources behind those figures are Embrace Pet Insurance and Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension).

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
About 71%[1] of people in Australia are cremated, so cremation feels ordinary. For small farm species the effect is practical: pet crematories are more numerous and more used to unusual requests, from a hen in a shoebox to two bonded wethers cremated together. For a larger animal, you may still need an equine or large-animal crematory, and those are spread more thinly.
For the Australia figure we rely on FuneralSmart (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Mosman rather than as pet data.
Weather, bloat and frozen ground in Mosman
Wherever you are, the rule for a farm animal is the same: shade, cover and speed. A goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death and can bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat. Lay the animal on its side on straw or a tarp, cover it loosely and ask for collection within the day.

What farm animal cremation costs in Mosman
Australian pet crematoria price by weight, and the top bands fit most farm pets. A provider survey puts the median individual cremation at about AUD 624 for a 40 to 60 kg pet and AUD 650 above 60 kg[4], while communal cremation starts from AUD 80[5]. A big wether or a mature pig may be quoted individually, and farm collection is usually extra.

What New South Wales allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
If your animal was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body and can poison scavenging wildlife, and US drug labels have warned since 2003[7] that such animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. That alone rules out a shallow grave. The notes below cover the general rules in New South Wales; cremation meets all of them.
In Australia, sheep, goats and pigs need a property identification code and NLIS identification even when they're pets, so a death may need recording against your PIC. Burial on rural land is usually allowed under state and council rules, but many suburban councils restrict it. Unusual deaths can be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline. Summer heat makes prompt collection important.
The New South Wales page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Mosman's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, second and third
- Tell your child soon, in plain words. "Your goat died this morning" is kinder than a softer phrase that leaves a young child waiting for the animal to come back.
- Let them choose whether to see the body. For a school-age child, a blanket over everything but the head is generally gentle enough.
- Give them a job: brushing the coat one last time, choosing the halter to keep, or picking flowers to leave at the gate.
- Time the collection around them. One child will want to see the crew leave; another is better off at a friend's house or in class while it happens. Tell the crew you'd like a pickup with no rush.
- If the animal was a club or show project, let the leader know. This won't be the first young member they've seen through it, and they may offer a tribute at the following meeting.
- Plan something for when the ashes come home: planting a tree, scattering them beside the fence line, or a little urn for their bedroom shelf.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
Some Mosman families have children in pony club or riding lessons, or own a horse on agistment outside the city. When a horse dies, the agistment owner or yard manager often knows what usually happens. Ask them first, then decide whether you want ashes back, a keepsake such as a tail clipping, or a simpler option. Some families like to be present when the animal is collected; say so if that matters to you.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Mosman?
The closest communities we cover are Sydney (about 3 miles), Wollongong (about 46 miles) and Newcastle (about 70 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Mosman too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to Sydney to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Sydney (roughly 3 miles from Mosman) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How do Australia attitudes to cremation compare?
FuneralSmart (2023) puts the Australia human cremation rate at about 71%[1]. We show it on the Mosman page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is it cheaper to cremate two goats or sheep together?
Sometimes. Some providers charge by combined weight for a joint cremation of bonded animals, which can cost less than two separate private cremations; the ashes come back mixed in one urn. Others price each animal on its own. If both died together, or you'd like a companion's ashes added later, ask for a price on each option before you decide.
Can someone collect a dead goat or pig from a farm near Mosman?
Yes, most crematories that take farm species offer farm collection, usually with a charge for mileage beyond a base radius. Tell them the weight, how close a vehicle can get and whether there's mud, a slope or gates. Larger animals need a winch or tail-lift, so ask what the crew brings and whether you'll need to help lift.
Do I have to report the death of a backyard hen or pet pig?
A single death with an obvious cause usually doesn't need reporting. Unexplained deaths in poultry, pigs, sheep or goats are different: several diseases in these species are notifiable, and the authorities would rather hear about a false alarm than miss an outbreak. Call your vet first; they'll know whether to involve the animal health authority.
