Who can help with a goat, pig or sheep in Gothenburg
Horses are enormously popular in Sweden, and the countryside around Gothenburg, into Kungsbacka, Lerum and Kungälv, is dotted with riding schools, livery yards and small farms keeping sheep, cattle and pigs. When a large animal dies, Swedish farm animals normally go to an authorised collection service for rendering. Individual cremation with ashes returned is also available privately for animals that were companions rather than production stock.
Many large animals around Gothenburg are loved companions: the pony a child learned to ride on, a pair of sheep keeping the grass down, a rescued pig at a sanctuary on the islands. For those animals, owners often want something more personal than standard collection. Talk to your vet about individual cremation and what a farewell at the stable or farm could look like before the day comes.
In a metro the size of Gothenburg, the provider that answers the phone fastest isn't always the one that can help. A pet crematory in the city may take a 60 lb pygmy goat without a second thought, then turn down a 200 lb kunekune because the chamber door is too narrow. Large-animal crematories tend to sit on the rural fringe, near horse country, because they need space and permits. Budget for a drive, or for a collection fee that reflects one.

The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is the norm for people in Sweden: about 84.69%[1] of those who die there are cremated. That familiarity helps a little with farm animals. Families here rarely need to explain why they'd like the ashes rather than a grave, and pet crematories are well established. The limit is capacity rather than attitude: fewer of them take animals over about 150 lb, so the choice for a big goat or pig can be narrower than the local culture suggests.
We take the Sweden rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Gothenburg, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Heat, cold and timing in Gothenburg
Without local weather figures for Gothenburg, trust your own sense of the day. If you're comfortable in a T-shirt, treat it as warm and move quickly; if the troughs are icing over, you have more time but harder access. Farm animals don't die to a forecast, so plan for the week you're in and the one ahead.

Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Gothenburg
Prices in Sweden will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Vastra Gotaland: Vastra Gotaland costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Livestock and pet rules in Vastra Gotaland
Two things catch hobby farmers out: time limits and disease reporting. Many places expect a dead farm animal to be dealt with within a day or two, and some illnesses in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before the body goes anywhere. Here's what applies to pets generally in Vastra Gotaland; your vet can confirm the livestock side.
What to do when a farm animal dies in Gothenburg
- Move the body into shade, a cool barn or a shed, set it on its side over straw or a tarp, and drape something loose over it against flies. Never wrap it tightly in plastic.
- Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. A close companion can have a few minutes to look at and sniff the body if that seems to settle it, then take it where the others can't see.
- Call your vet if the death was sudden or unexplained. Some diseases in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before anything else happens.
- Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. That one choice decides which providers can help: private cremation, communal cremation or fallen-stock collection.
- Weigh or estimate the weight honestly, then state it alongside the species as soon as you ring. Plenty of pet crematories set a limit far under what an adult pig or goat weighs.
- Ask for a written total covering cremation, collection, mileage and the urn before anyone sets off.
- Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
The land around Gothenburg is famously rocky, with thin soils over granite, which makes burying a large animal difficult even where rules would allow it. Wet autumns and winters leave paddocks soft, too. A collection truck needs firm footing close to the animal, so explain honestly whether your field is bare rock, soft turf or somewhere in between, and where the nearest hard track runs.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Gothenburg follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Should the rest of the herd see the body?
Many keepers find it helps. Goats, alpacas and donkeys in particular often settle better if a bonded companion is allowed a few minutes to see and sniff the body. Stay with them, then move the body out of sight before collection. Expect calling or pacing for a few days afterwards; steady routines help.
Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?
If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
Can I bury my pet sheep or goat on my property in Gothenburg?
It depends on the country and the species. Many places treat pet sheep, goats and pigs as farmed animals and send them to approved collection or rendering rather than allowing burial, while others permit burial on rural land with depth and distance rules. Your vet or local animal health authority can tell you what applies at your address.
Do I have to report the death of a backyard hen or pet pig?
A single death with an obvious cause usually doesn't need reporting. Unexplained deaths in poultry, pigs, sheep or goats are different: several diseases in these species are notifiable, and the authorities would rather hear about a false alarm than miss an outbreak. Call your vet first; they'll know whether to involve the animal health authority.
How much ash will I get back from a goat, sheep or hen?
Cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[3]. A 70 lb pygmy goat returns roughly two to three and a half pounds of ash; a 160 lb alpaca returns five to eight. A hen returns only a spoonful or two, so ask for a small container rather than a standard urn. The urn size calculator on our tools page can help.
