When a hobby-farm animal dies in Stockholm

Stockholm, Sweden

Where farm species go after a death near Stockholm

Swedish winters complicate large-animal aftercare around Stockholm: frozen ground rules out burial for months, and icy yards and snowy lanes can make it hard to move a heavy animal. Before collection, check whether the lane is ploughed and whether a truck can reach the stable or barn without getting stuck. In the spring thaw, mud brings its own problems, so describe the ground and the gate width clearly when you call.

Swedish farm and stable families often want a lasting reminder even when a whole-animal cremation is too costly. Depending on the animal, that might be a braid of tail hair, a sheep's bell, a clip of wool, an ear tag or the name plate from a stall, and hair or wool can be set in resin or woven into jewellery. Take what you want before collection, and ask for a few minutes if the yard wants to say goodbye together.

Prices in Stockholm vary more between providers than they do in small towns, and farm species widen the gap. One crematory may quote a private cremation for your goat at a large-dog price; another may send you to an equine facility that charges by the pound. Ask for a written total that shows the cremation, collection, mileage and urn as separate lines, so you're comparing like with like.

Stockholm is home to about 975,000 people.

84.69%[1]

In 2023, 84.69% of deaths in Sweden were cremated (58 crematoria).

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

How Sweden thinks about cremation

In Sweden, where roughly 84.69%[1] of people are cremated, scattering is a familiar idea, and that suits smallholders. Many local keepers take a goat's or sheep's ashes back out to the paddock rather than keeping them indoors. On your own land scattering generally needs no permit, which makes it an easy tradition to adopt even if you'd never bury stock.

That Sweden rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Stockholm only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Stockholm weather and your animal's first hours

Local weather affects two things: how quickly your animal needs to be collected, and whether burying or scattering outdoors is practical. In cold months the ground may be frozen; in hot months speed matters more than anything. Your vet or provider in Stockholm will know the seasons, so ask what they'd do at this time of year.

What farm animal cremation costs in Stockholm

By our estimate, individual cremation across the markets we track costs about double the shared option[4], and for a heavy animal the gap in euros grows. Around Stockholm, check whether VAT is included and whether collection from a rural address is priced per kilometre. A written quote naming the species avoids surprises at the door.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Sweden: Sweden costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Livestock law and pet rules in Sweden

The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for Sweden below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.

A practical checklist for smallholders in Stockholm

  1. Pick the spot before the vet arrives. Level ground a vehicle can reach, such as the barn aisle or a paddock by the gate, means your animal won't have to be dragged far afterwards.
  2. Book the crematory or collector first, then the vet. Once you know the pickup time, set the euthanasia an hour or two before it rather than the evening before a long wait.
  3. Ask the vet about sedation first. A calm animal nibbling grain or browse while the sedative works makes the moment gentler for everyone standing with it.
  4. Decide who will be there. Some keepers want the whole family present; others send children to feed the other animals and bring them back afterwards to say goodbye.
  5. Keep a companion in the next pen, close enough to hear you but not underfoot. Let it in afterwards to see and smell the body if you think it will help.
  6. Hand your instructions to the crew yourself: whether it's communal or private, which urn you picked, and any item you'd like back, a clipped lock of hair for instance.

Ways to remember a farm companion

Riding is popular in Sweden, and stables, sheep farms, dairy herds and hobby farms ring Stockholm, on Ekerö, in the northern suburbs and out in the farmland of Uppland and Södermanland. Many horse owners here board their animals, and many small farms keep sheep, goats or a few cattle. When a large animal dies, the stable manager or your vet can usually help arrange a regional service. Ask plainly whether individual cremation is possible or whether removal is for disposal.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Sweden?

For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Stockholm follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?

Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.

Is it cheaper to cremate two goats or sheep together?

Sometimes. Some providers charge by combined weight for a joint cremation of bonded animals, which can cost less than two separate private cremations; the ashes come back mixed in one urn. Others price each animal on its own. If both died together, or you'd like a companion's ashes added later, ask for a price on each option before you decide.

Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?

Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.

Do I have to report the death of a backyard hen or pet pig?

A single death with an obvious cause usually doesn't need reporting. Unexplained deaths in poultry, pigs, sheep or goats are different: several diseases in these species are notifiable, and the authorities would rather hear about a false alarm than miss an outbreak. Call your vet first; they'll know whether to involve the animal health authority.

Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?

If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
