Malmo, Skane
What arranging farm animal cremation in Malmo is like
Farm animals in Sweden are normally collected through the regulated fallen-stock system when they die, while horses, ponies and pet goats or sheep can often be cremated individually with the ashes returned. Be clear about which applies when you ask for options, because it changes who can help, how quickly, and what it costs. Many horse owners also ask for a lock of mane or tail to be kept.
Skåne around Malmö is flat, fertile farm country, with arable fields, pig and cattle farms, and a strong horse culture that shows in the many riding schools and stables across the region. When a large animal dies on a farm or at a stable, share the location, yard access and how close a vehicle can get, especially if fields are wet after autumn rain.
Around Malmo, pet pigs raise problems goats don't. A pig is dense for its size, carries its weight low and has no horns or fleece to hold, so lifting one takes a sling or board and three people rather than two. Say it's a pig when you book, so the crew brings the right equipment the first time.
Malmo's population is around 316,000.

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

Burial, cremation and farm tradition in Sweden
In Sweden, about 84.69%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. That doesn't make livestock rules any softer, but it does mean cremation is a normal conversation. Many hobby farmers here choose it for a named goat, alpaca or pet pig partly because it keeps the animal with them if they ever sell the land, and partly because it avoids digging a deep grave by machine.
The Sweden figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Malmo weather and your animal's first hours
Wherever you are, the rule for a farm animal is the same: shade, cover and speed. A goat, sheep or alpaca keeps fermenting after death and can bloat within hours in warm weather, and a large body holds heat. Lay the animal on its side on straw or a tarp, cover it loosely and ask for collection within the day.

Prices by weight for goats, sheep, pigs and birds
Prices in Sweden will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.

What Skane allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Skane; livestock rules can be stricter.
What to do first, second and third
- Stop and count. Two or more birds or animals dying within a day or two, with no obvious cause such as a predator, is a reason to pause before you move anything.
- Put on gloves and keep the bodies away from the living stock. Double-bag birds; cover larger animals where they lie.
- Ring the vet, or your national animal health agency, then give a precise account of what you found. In many countries, bird flu, swine fevers and a number of sheep and goat diseases have to be reported.
- Wait for the all-clear before you cremate, bury or compost anything. You may be offered testing, and one of the bodies might have to go off to a lab first.
- Keep visitors and borrowed equipment off the property while you wait for answers, and clean boots and feeders whenever you move between pens.
- Once you're cleared, decide animal by animal. It's common to choose communal cremation for the bulk of a flock while giving one special bird a private cremation of its own.
Keeping your goat, pig or hen close
Riding is hugely popular in Sweden, and many Malmö families keep horses at stables on the city's edge or in villages across Skåne. Winters are mild here compared with the rest of the country, but paddocks can still turn to mud. If you care for an older horse or pony, ask in advance what collection involves, whether individual cremation is available in the region, and the full cost.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Malmo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How long until I get my farm animal's ashes back?
Many families get the ashes within one to two weeks. A large animal can take longer, because the cremation itself runs for hours and the provider may batch large-animal days. If the crematory is in a larger centre away from Malmo, add time for the return trip, or arrange to collect the ashes yourself.
Will a pet crematory near Malmo take a goat or sheep?
Many will, but not all. Pet crematories are built around dogs and cats, and some cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb or don't take farm species at all. Give the species and an honest weight estimate on the first call. If the answer is no, ask who they'd recommend; they usually know which local providers take larger animals.
How much ash will I get back from a goat, sheep or hen?
Cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[3]. A 70 lb pygmy goat returns roughly two to three and a half pounds of ash; a 160 lb alpaca returns five to eight. A hen returns only a spoonful or two, so ask for a small container rather than a standard urn. The urn size calculator on our tools page can help.
What's the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation?
Private means your animal is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. Partitioned means several animals share the chamber but are kept apart, so the ashes are mostly, not certainly, your animal's. Communal means animals are cremated together and nothing is returned. For a named goat or pig, ask for private in writing if the ashes matter.
Should I ask for a post-mortem before cremation?
If the death was sudden and you have other animals, it's often worth it. A post-mortem can show whether parasites, poisoning or an infectious disease is putting the remaining animals at risk, and it has to happen before cremation. Ask your vet quickly, because a body that has spent a day in the heat is much harder to examine usefully.
