Cremation for goats, sheep and pigs in Santander

Santander, Cantabria

Where farm species go after a death near Santander

Much of Cantabria's livestock is raised on mountain pastures and small farms, and when a working animal dies, farm disposal channels are the usual route. If you want a horse or family animal cremated individually with the ashes returned, you'll need a specialized provider, and the cost is higher. Ask for a written quote in euros that includes transport. Remote valley farms may add travel time and cost.

Cantabria's green valleys are dairy and cattle country, with small family farms, native cattle breeds and horses grazing on the hillsides not far from Santander. When a horse, cow or other large animal dies on one of these farms, steep, narrow access is often the main problem, especially in wet months when the ground turns soft. Describe the terrain clearly when you call.

Some vets in Santander may be willing to hold a small animal such as a hen or a young kid in a cold room for a day while you decide. For anything larger that's rarely possible. Know before you call whether you're asking for storage, collection or simply advice, and the conversation will go quicker.

Santander is home to about 172,000 people. Bilbao, roughly 46 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Santander run from there.

Our pages for Bilbao (46 miles, a larger centre), San Sebastian (92 miles) and Oviedo (103 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Santander as well.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The numbers above come from Extension Horses (eXtension national Cooperative Extension) and Embrace Pet Insurance, if you'd like to read the original sources.

Cremation habits in Spain, and what they mean for your animal

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Spain, at about 50.11%[1], but burial still has deep roots, especially in farming country. You'll find both traditions among smallholders. Neither is more proper than the other for a goat or sheep; what matters is what the rules allow for that species on your land and what feels right to you.

The Spain figure comes from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

What the seasons mean for farm animal aftercare in Santander

In warm weather, keep the body shaded, loosely covered against flies and off sun-heated ground, and ask for same-day collection. In cold weather you have more time, but lay the animal on a tarp so it can be moved easily and doesn't freeze to bedding. Either way, keep dogs and scavengers well away.

Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Santander

In Santander, as across much of Europe, dead sheep, goats and pigs are normally handled under animal by-product rules, which favour collection by an approved service over burial. If you want your animal's own ashes back, ask a pet crematorium whether it accepts farmed species at your animal's weight, and whether individual cremation is confirmed in writing.

Before you bury or compost in Cantabria

Composting is an approved route for dead stock in many places: in the 2014–2015 US bird flu outbreak it handled 85%[5] of poultry carcasses, according to the EPA. But it isn't allowed for every species everywhere, and a pile needs careful management. The pet-level picture for Cantabria is below; check the livestock rules before you build one.

In Spain, dead farm animals, including sheep, goats and pigs kept as pets, are normally handled by authorised collection under EU animal by-product rules, and many are covered by livestock insurance schemes. If you want your animal's ashes, ask a pet crematorium whether it takes farm species at your animal's weight and confirms individual cremation in writing.

What to do first, second and third

  1. Move the body into shade or a cool barn, lay it on its side on straw or a tarp and cover it loosely against flies. Don't seal it in plastic.
  2. Keep the rest of the herd or flock calm. Let a bonded companion see and sniff the body for a few minutes if it seems to help, then move it out of sight.
  3. Call your vet if the death was sudden or unexplained. Some diseases in pigs, poultry, sheep and goats must be reported before anything else happens.
  4. Decide whether you want your animal's own ashes. That one choice decides which providers can help: private cremation, communal cremation or fallen-stock collection.
  5. Weigh or estimate the weight honestly and give it with the species on the first call. Many pet crematories cap weight well below a grown goat or pig.
  6. Ask for a written total covering cremation, collection, mileage and the urn before anyone sets off.
  7. Take keepsakes before collection: a lock of fleece, a few feathers, the halter or collar, an ear tag.

Ashes, fleece and memories on the farm

Riding and horse keeping have a following around Santander, from riding schools to families with a horse on rural land in the valleys. Losing a horse means coordinating with the stable, the vet and a provider that can handle the weight. Winter rain can make collection harder, so call early and share photos of the site if asked. Narrow valley roads can limit vehicle size.

Questions people ask

Will I have to travel to Bilbao to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Bilbao (roughly 46 miles from Santander) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

Is cremation common in Spain?

For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Santander follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Santander?

Usually yes. Bilbao is about 46 miles away, San Sebastian is about 92 miles away and Oviedo is about 103 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What if my animal dies while we're away from home?

Ask whoever is minding the farm to call your vet first and you second. Before you travel, leave written instructions: private or communal, which provider, how much you're willing to spend and any keepsake to save. A signed note lets a sitter act quickly in hot weather instead of waiting for you to pick up the phone, and it spares them guessing what you'd want.

Can I keep backyard chickens and goats in Santander, and does that change aftercare?

Many local rules allow a few hens, and some allow miniature goats or a pet pig, usually with limits on numbers. The same rules often restrict burying livestock in built-up areas, and leases or homeowner and residents' associations can be stricter. In practice, most city keepers choose cremation, which avoids the question. Check before planning a burial.

Is it worth cremating a single backyard hen?

If she mattered to you, yes. A hen is the least expensive farm animal to cremate, falling in the smallest pet price band, and communal cremation costs less again. What comes back is tiny, only a few tablespoons of ash, so ask for a small keepsake box or scatter the ashes around the run. Some keepers save a few feathers instead of, or as well as, the ashes.
