About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, and the figure has been climbing for years. Farm animal aftercare has followed at its own pace. Burial on the farm is still common for stock, but more families now choose cremation for the animals they named: the pet goat, the old ewe, the pig that followed the children around the yard.

A rough rule holds almost everywhere: the bigger the animal, the more the law cares where it ends up. A hen or duck is treated much like any small pet. A 150 lb ewe or a pig brings setbacks from wells, depth requirements and sometimes an outright ban. In Spain, dead farm animals, including sheep, goats and pigs kept as pets, are normally handled by authorised collection under EU animal by-product rules, and many are covered by livestock insurance schemes. If you want your animal's ashes, ask a pet crematorium whether it takes farm species at your animal's weight and confirms individual cremation in writing.
A practical checklist for smallholders in Palma de Mallorca
- Pick the spot before the vet arrives. Choose flat ground with vehicle access, like the aisle of the barn or the paddock nearest the gate, so there's little distance to move your animal once it's over.
- Book the crematory or collector first, then the vet. With the pickup time fixed, schedule the euthanasia one or two hours ahead of it, instead of the night before and a long wait in between.
- Ask the vet about sedation first. A calm animal nibbling grain or browse while the sedative works makes the moment gentler for everyone standing with it.
- Decide who will be there. For some households, everyone stays; in others, the children go off to feed the rest of the stock and return afterwards for their own goodbye.
- Keep a companion in the next pen, close enough to hear you but not underfoot. Let it in afterwards to see and smell the body if you think it will help.
- Hand your instructions to the crew yourself: whether it's communal or private, which urn you picked, and any item you'd like back, a clipped lock of hair for instance.

Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Palma de Mallorca follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Who do I call first if a farm animal dies at night in Palma de Mallorca?
If the death was expected and the animal is safe from scavengers, you can usually wait until morning: shade, cover and call your vet or the crematory first thing. If it was sudden, or several animals are ill, call an emergency or farm vet that night. Collection itself can wait for daylight in most weather.
