Farm Animal Cremation in Asturias: what to know
Most keepers in Asturias have never had to arrange aftercare for a farm animal until the day it happens. That day tends to come with a heavy body, a short time window and a first phone call that ends with a pet crematory saying no. Knowing in advance which providers take your species, and roughly what they charge by weight, takes much of the pressure off.
Whether you're near one of the larger centres like Oviedo or on acreage at the end of a gravel road, weather shapes the first hours after a farm animal dies in Asturias. Goats, sheep and alpacas bloat quickly in heat, and frozen winter ground can make burial impossible for months. Plan collection with both in mind, and keep the body shaded, covered and on a tarp you can drag.

Local customs, and where a farm pet fits
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Asturias, at about 50.11%[1], but burial still has deep roots, especially in farming country. You'll find both traditions among smallholders. Neither is more proper than the other for a goat or sheep; what matters is what the rules allow for that species on your land and what feels right to you.
That Asturias rate is a human statistic published by Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Budgeting in Asturias for a pig, ewe or goat
By our estimate, individual cremation across the markets we track costs about double the shared option[2], and for a heavy animal the gap in euros grows. Around Asturias, check whether VAT is included and whether collection from a rural address is priced per kilometre. A written quote naming the species avoids surprises at the door.
Prices in Spain will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.
| Country and weight | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| France, 50 kg animal | €130 to €180[3] | €300 to €400[3] |
| Germany, all sizes | €85 to €205[4] | €165 to €375[4] |
| Norway, 51 to 90 kg | NOK 1,895[5] | NOK 4,990[5] |
| Netherlands, dog average | about €200[6] | about €300[6] |

Livestock law and pet rules in Asturias
If your animal was euthanized, the drugs remain in the body and can poison scavenging wildlife, and US drug labels have warned since 2003[8] that such animals need deep burial, incineration or another approved route. That alone rules out a shallow grave. The notes below cover the general rules in Asturias; cremation meets all of them.
In Spain, dead farm animals, including sheep, goats and pigs kept as pets, are normally handled by authorised collection under EU animal by-product rules, and many are covered by livestock insurance schemes. If you want your animal's ashes, ask a pet crematorium whether it takes farm species at your animal's weight and confirms individual cremation in writing.
If your animal dies today: a plan for Asturias
- Cover the body loosely and move it into shade or a cool outbuilding if you can do so safely.
- Let the herd or flock settle. Some keepers leave the body with a bonded companion for a short while; others move it straight away. Both are fine.
- Talk to your vet about the cause of death, any reporting duty and, for sheep and goats, whether testing is offered.
- Compare two providers if time allows. With farm species, weight limits and collection charges vary more than the cremation price.
- Confirm whether it's private, partitioned or communal, and get it on paper, since the three terms get muddled.
- Choose what the ashes come home in. A hen needs only a small container; a goat or sheep needs a full-size urn or scatter tube.
Memorials that fit a smallholding
Children often take the loss of a named farm animal hard, especially if they helped raise it from a kid or lamb. Letting them choose the scattering spot, paint a stone marker or write the animal's name on the barn wall gives them something to do with the feeling. The rest of the herd may call for a few days too; that's normal.

Questions people ask
Is farm animal cremation common in Asturias?
For people, about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Asturias end in cremation. For farm animals, burial and fallen-stock collection are still the traditional routes, but more families choose private cremation for the goats, pigs, sheep and alpacas they've named, especially in towns and on hobby farms near the cities.
What should I keep ready in Asturias if I have older goats or sheep?
A tarp big enough to drag the animal, gloves, a sheet or feed sacks to cover it, contact details for a large-animal crematory that will accept your animals, and a note of your wishes: private or communal, and any keepsake. In a hot spell or a hard freeze, that preparation saves hours.
Can I bury a pet goat, sheep or pig on my land in Asturias?
It depends on the species and the local rules. Many places allow burial of livestock on your own land with conditions on depth, distance from wells and water, and timing; some ban it for farmed species altogether, and cities often restrict it within their limits. If your animal was euthanized, deep burial or cremation protects wildlife.
Where in Asturias is farm animal cremation hardest to arrange?
Usually in the most rural areas, where crematories that accept large animals are furthest away and collection charges climb with every mile. Keepers there often deliver the animal themselves by trailer, or split a pickup with a neighbor. Ask any provider where their collection radius ends before you need them.
How many communities do you cover in Asturias?
We currently have local farm animal aftercare guides for 1 communities in Asturias, including Oviedo. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices by weight, the rules for burial and composting, and how collection usually works there.
Why won't the pet crematory take my animal?
Usually because of weight or species. Many pet crematories are built for dogs and cats and cap weight at around 100 to 150 lb, or don't take pigs or ruminants at all. Equine and large-animal crematories take heavier animals. Ask the first provider who they'd recommend; they usually know.
