Goat, pig and alpaca aftercare in Rotterdam, South Holland

Rotterdam, South Holland

Goats, pigs and backyard flocks in Rotterdam

Dutch families often keep horses, sheep and goats for many years, and children's farms and sanctuaries have animals that whole neighborhoods know by name. When cremation isn't possible, a braid of mane, a bell, a halter or some wool can be kept. A tree on the dike or a small stone near the stable gives a place to remember. A framed photo of the animal in the pasture completes it.

Polder land stays soft through most seasons, and water-filled ditches line every pasture, so reaching a large animal with a heavy vehicle can be tricky. When you call about collection, describe the access road, the ditches and bridges, and whether a lorry with a crane can reach the stable or field. In summer, move quickly; in winter, frost can actually firm the ground.

Prices in Rotterdam vary more between providers than they do in small towns, and farm species widen the gap. One crematory may quote a private cremation for your goat at a large-dog price; another may send you to an equine facility that charges by the pound. Ask for a written total that shows the cremation, collection, mileage and urn as separate lines, so you're comparing like with like.

About 651,000 people live in Rotterdam, which makes it the largest of the 2 South Holland communities we cover.

If you want to compare providers, look at The Hague (13 miles), Utrecht (30 miles) and Haarlem (32 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

68.37%[1]

In 2023, 68.37% of deaths in the Netherlands were cremated (108 crematoria).

$600-$1,000[2]

Cremating a 1,000-pound horse was reported to cost about $600-$1,000, depending on location and the price of propane.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation

Roughly 68.37%[1] of people in Netherlands are cremated today, a big shift from a generation ago. The same shift is showing up on hobby farms: people who once would have buried an old wether in the corner of the field now ask for his ashes back. Providers who take farm species are still fewer than those who take dogs, so the question is usually where, not whether.

For the Netherlands figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Rotterdam rather than as pet data.

Heat, cold and timing in Rotterdam

Without local weather figures for Rotterdam, trust your own sense of the day. If you're comfortable in a T-shirt, treat it as warm and move quickly; if the troughs are icing over, you have more time but harder access. Farm animals don't die to a forecast, so plan for the week you're in and the one ahead.

How much to budget in Rotterdam

Prices in the Netherlands will depend on your animal's weight, individual or collective cremation and how far the provider travels to collect. The table shows published examples from several European countries; most are for large dogs, the closest weight band to a small goat, sheep or pig. Expect heavier animals to be quoted individually.

Prices for Rotterdam track the wider South Holland market, so use the South Holland price table as your baseline and the services page to see what is included.

Burial, composting and reporting rules in South Holland

You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for South Holland; livestock rules can be stricter.

In the Netherlands, dead farm animals, including sheep and goats kept as pets, are normally collected by Rendac, the national rendering service, and nothing is returned. Some dierencrematoria accept goats, sheep and smaller pigs for individual (individuele) cremation; ask about weight limits and whether collection from your address is included.

A practical checklist for smallholders in Rotterdam

  1. If the death was expected, there's probably a plan already agreed with your vet. Ring to fix the pickup time, and if euthanasia is at home, arrange it for early morning while it's cool.
  2. If it was sudden, your first call is to the vet or farm vet. They can say whether tests are worth doing and whether the other animals might be in danger.
  3. Clear a path for collection. Open gates, move vehicles and think about how a van or trailer will reach the animal.
  4. Line up help. Moving a 150 lb animal safely needs two people at minimum, along with a slide board, sled or tarp.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: whether the cremation is genuinely private, how they track which animal is which between the gate and the ashes, and when you'll get the ashes back.
  6. Check the rules before any burial or composting if that's what you'd rather do: which species, how deep, how far from water, and how soon.

Ways to remember a farm companion

Around Rotterdam, the polders of the Hoeksche Waard, Voorne-Putten and the Krimpenerwaard are dairy country, sheep graze the dikes, and horses and goats live on smallholdings. Inside the city, children's farms keep goats, sheep, pigs and ponies, and the zoo cares for large species. After a death, the farm or vet usually arranges collection; individual cremation for large animals is available in the Netherlands but limited.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Rotterdam?

The closest communities we cover are The Hague (about 13 miles), Utrecht (about 30 miles) and Haarlem (about 32 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Rotterdam too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

How do Netherlands attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Netherlands human cremation rate at about 68.37%[1]. We show it on the Rotterdam page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Should I ask for a post-mortem before cremation?

If the death was sudden and you have other animals, it's often worth it. A post-mortem can show whether parasites, poisoning or an infectious disease is putting the remaining animals at risk, and it has to happen before cremation. Ask your vet quickly, because a body that has spent a day in the heat is much harder to examine usefully.

Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?

Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.

How much ash will I get back from a goat, sheep or hen?

Cremated remains are about 3-5% of body weight[3]. A 70 lb pygmy goat returns roughly two to three and a half pounds of ash; a 160 lb alpaca returns five to eight. A hen returns only a spoonful or two, so ask for a small container rather than a standard urn. The urn size calculator on our tools page can help.

Can I get my animal's ashes back through fallen-stock collection?

No. Knackers, fallen-stock collectors and renderers process animals in bulk and nothing is returned. It's a respectful, lawful and inexpensive route, and some owners are comfortable with it. If you want your own animal's ashes, you need a private cremation, confirmed in writing, from a crematory that takes farm species.
