Groningen, Netherlands
Hobby-farm aftercare in Groningen: the local picture
Outside the city, the province of Groningen is flat, open farmland with dairy herds, sheep on the dikes and villages built on old mounds called terpen. It's also horse country, home of the Groningen horse breed, and riding stables and private paddocks are common around the city. When a large animal dies on a farm or yard here, give the exact location and access details, since clay soils and narrow farm tracks can be difficult for heavy vehicles after rain.
In the Netherlands, commercial farm animals that die are normally collected through the national system for fallen stock, and that's usually the default for livestock. Horses, ponies, pet goats and sheep kept as companions are a different case: many owners here choose individual cremation so they can keep the ashes. Let us know which situation you're in, because the arrangement, timing and cost differ considerably between farm stock and a family animal.
Groningen sits in the middle ground for farm animal aftercare. There's usually at least one pet crematory in or near town, and often a mixed-practice vet who treats goats, sheep and pigs as well as dogs. Whether either can take your animal depends almost entirely on its weight. A pygmy goat or a few hens are easy; a full-size dairy goat, an alpaca or a mature pet pig may need a larger chamber, sometimes around Groningen or further out.
With roughly 203,000 residents, Groningen is one of the Netherlands communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Amsterdam (91 miles, a larger centre), Utrecht (99 miles) and Haarlem (99 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Groningen routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The local attitude to cremation
Roughly 68.37%[1] of people in Netherlands are cremated today, a big shift from a generation ago. The same shift is showing up on hobby farms: people who once would have buried an old wether in the corner of the field now ask for his ashes back. Providers who take farm species are still fewer than those who take dogs, so the question is usually where, not whether.
The Netherlands figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, cold and timing in Groningen
In warm weather, keep the body shaded, loosely covered against flies and off sun-heated ground, and ask for same-day collection. In cold weather you have more time, but lay the animal on a tarp so it can be moved easily and doesn't freeze to bedding. Either way, keep dogs and scavengers well away.

Cremation, collection and the alternatives: costs in Groningen
In several European countries the default route for a dead sheep, goat or pig is collection by the national rendering service. Near Groningen that's usually the cheapest option, and nothing comes back. A pet crematorium is the alternative if you want the ashes; the prices in the table give a sense of the step up.
The Netherlands price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Netherlands allows for goats, sheep, pigs and poultry
The rules for a dead goat, sheep, pig or backyard bird usually come from livestock and animal-health law, not from the pet rules most people have heard of. That can close options a dog owner takes for granted. The general pet notes for Netherlands below are a starting point; for farm species, also check your state or national guidance on dead livestock before you bury or compost.
In the Netherlands, dead farm animals, including sheep and goats kept as pets, are normally collected by Rendac, the national rendering service, and nothing is returned. Some dierencrematoria accept goats, sheep and smaller pigs for individual (individuele) cremation; ask about weight limits and whether collection from your address is included.
If your animal dies today: a plan for Groningen
- Tell your child soon, in plain words. "Your goat died this morning" is kinder than a softer phrase that leaves a young child waiting for the animal to come back.
- Let them choose whether to see the body. Covered with a blanket, with only the head showing, is usually gentle enough for school-age children.
- Give them a job: brushing the coat one last time, choosing the halter to keep, or picking flowers to leave at the gate.
- Time the collection around them. Some children want to wave the crew off; others are better at school or a friend's house while the animal leaves. Ask the crew for an unhurried pickup.
- If the animal was a club or show project, tell the leader. They have helped other young members through this and may suggest a small tribute at the next meeting.
- Plan something for when the ashes come home: a scattering along the fence, a tree to plant, or a small urn for a shelf in their room.
Ways to remember a farm companion
Groningen's weather is mild but wet, and wind off the Wadden Sea can make winter yard work miserable. A horse or cow that dies in a pasture may need moving with equipment, and soft ground in autumn and winter can complicate that. If you keep an older horse, donkey or a few sheep outside the city, ask ahead what collection involves in bad weather, and whether the provider travels to the far north of the country.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Groningen?
Usually yes. Amsterdam is about 91 miles away, Utrecht is about 99 miles away and Haarlem is about 99 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Groningen page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 68.37%[1] of Netherlands residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
Can I bury my pet sheep or goat on my property in Groningen?
It depends on the country and the species. Many places treat pet sheep, goats and pigs as farmed animals and send them to approved collection or rendering rather than allowing burial, while others permit burial on rural land with depth and distance rules. Your vet or local animal health authority can tell you what applies at your address.
Do I have to report the death of a backyard hen or pet pig?
A single death with an obvious cause usually doesn't need reporting. Unexplained deaths in poultry, pigs, sheep or goats are different: several diseases in these species are notifiable, and the authorities would rather hear about a false alarm than miss an outbreak. Call your vet first; they'll know whether to involve the animal health authority.
How much does farm animal cremation cost in Groningen?
Prices depend on weight, individual or communal cremation and collection. Published pet prices outside the US top out around the equivalent of a few hundred pounds, dollars or euros for the heaviest band, and goats, sheep and pigs usually sit at that top end or are quoted separately. Ask for a written quote in local currency.
