In Japan, where roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, scattering is a familiar idea, and that suits smallholders. Many local keepers take a goat's or sheep's ashes back out to the paddock rather than keeping them indoors. On your own land scattering generally needs no permit, which makes it an easy tradition to adopt even if you'd never bury stock.

Rules worth knowing in Japan
You don't need a permit to have a farm animal cremated. What you do instead of cremation is where rules come in: many places set a time limit after death, a minimum burial depth, distances from wells and water, and restrictions on composting certain species. Here's the general picture for Japan; livestock rules can be stricter.
In Japan, keepers of pigs, goats and sheep generally have reporting duties to their prefecture even for small numbers, and farm animals in cities are rare. Many pet funeral companies set a weight limit, so a goat or pig may need a specialist. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) and whether a larger animal needs a different facility.
The first day, step by step
- Check the time. In warm weather, aim to have your animal collected or delivered the same day. Ruminants bloat quickly.
- Lay the body on a tarp that's sturdy enough to pull, and prop the head up a little if you can; loading will go much more smoothly afterwards.
- Call a vet if more than one animal has died or anything seems unusual, especially in a backyard flock or a pig.
- Ring providers with the species, weight and your location. Find out the chamber size, what lifting equipment they have and how far they'll travel.
- Get the price in writing, and make sure it covers mileage, out-of-hours fees and any winch charge.
- Watch the others. Donkeys, alpacas and goats sometimes pace or call out for days. Hold to the usual routine and spend longer with the animal that was closest.
Keeping your goat, pig or hen close
Inside Saitama city, large animals are rare: the green strip of rice paddies around Minuma is farmland, not pasture. A racetrack in the Urawa district does bring racehorses and their handlers into the city, and the prefecture's northern plain and the Chichibu hills hold dairy and beef cattle, pigs and small livestock. For any animal of that size you will usually deal with a specialist handler with lifting equipment, so describe the site and the route a truck would take.

Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
Can two bonded goats or sheep be cremated together?
Some providers will do this if you ask, and return the mixed ashes in one urn. It isn't a standard private cremation, so make your instruction clear and check the paperwork says so. If one animal has died and the other is still alive, you can also keep the first one's ashes and ask for them to be combined later.
What's the difference between private, partitioned and communal cremation?
Private means your animal is cremated alone and every bit of ash returned is theirs. Partitioned means several animals share the chamber but are kept apart, so the ashes are mostly, not certainly, your animal's. Communal means animals are cremated together and nothing is returned. For a named goat or pig, ask for private in writing if the ashes matter.
