Cremation is the minority choice in Italy, at about 38.16%[1] of people, and some neighbors may think it an odd expense for a goat or sheep. You don't owe anyone an explanation. An animal you named and handled every day isn't worth its sale price to you, and a private cremation is a reasonable way to mark that.

If you rent your land or keep animals on someone else's property, the landowner's say matters as much as the law. Many tenancies and grazing agreements forbid burial, and a landlord may not want a compost pile either. Cremation needs nobody's permission. Here's the general picture for pets in Tuscany; your lease may add conditions of its own.
In Italy, dead farmed animals, including pet sheep, goats and pigs, normally go through authorised collection under EU animal by-product rules rather than being buried on the land. Some pet crematoria accept smaller farm species for individual cremation; ask about weight limits and paperwork, and check with your ASL veterinary service if the cause of death is unclear.
If your animal dies today: a plan for Siena
- Stay safe first. Don't try to lift a heavy animal alone, and keep children and dogs back until the body is covered.
- Note the details your vet will ask for: its age, what signs you noticed lately, anything it was given, and whether others are off color.
- Decide on ashes or no ashes. Wanting them back means a private cremation; not wanting them opens up the cheaper, simpler routes of fallen-stock collection or communal cremation.

Can my goat or sheep be cremated with its halter or blanket?
Many providers allow a natural-fiber halter, a cotton blanket or a handful of hay to go with the animal, but metal buckles, bells and plastic ear tags are usually removed first. If you'd like to keep the halter or bell, say so; it's one of the most common keepsakes. Check what the provider allows before the day so nothing precious goes by mistake.
Should I ask for a post-mortem before cremation?
If the death was sudden and you have other animals, it's often worth it. A post-mortem can show whether parasites, poisoning or an infectious disease is putting the remaining animals at risk, and it has to happen before cremation. Ask your vet quickly, because a body that has spent a day in the heat is much harder to examine usefully.
